Perfect Summer Days

Since I got to take Natalie to California early, Hubby said he got to take Natalie to Nebraska for her softball tournament.  Fair enough but I think I got the better deal because I didn't have to drive three hours from the airport to get to the hotel... and lose an hour with the time change... so check in at 4:30am.  I am amazed she was able to play 3 games that day and that he was able to function as a fan at all.

These girls demolished the day one competition, mercy ruling all 3 teams they played.  The next day they had a bye for their first game (since they were #1 seed), won their 2nd game of the day, and came home as tournament runners up.  Always fun to bring home hardware.  I'm just glad they were safe and had fun!

While we were in Orlando for spring break a woodpecker decided the front of our house would be a great place to make a new nest and then abandoned his project.  We had the damage repaired in June and it looks amazing.  If you need something like this done, ask me for a reference.  They have been great to us at both our old house and our new house.  (Below is an in process photo from my bathroom window.)

Kate went camping with some of her friends and even made a new friend and sent me the photo.  Love it!  Sounds like they all had a ton of fun swimming and cliff jumping they didn't want to come home.  I'm so happy for them.  The weather was amazing and the moon and clouds were showing off at our house too.

Thanks to Juneteenth and Michelle having an extra day off work, Natalie finally got to go camping too.  Michelle is back with the county's Youth Corps and after onboarding on Monday they got straight to work pulling weeds and removing barbed wire.  (Michelle literally wore out her gloves Hubby bought her last year so she went to Home Depot and bought herself some new ones.)  Since Juneteenth was on a Friday this year the county gave the corps members Thursday as a holiday.  So Natalie and I made sure we had everything we needed in the truck and picked up Michelle from work on Wednesday and drove to our reservations at Arapahoe Bay Campground by Lake Grandby.  Just being out there with all those visible stars at night around a campfire was worth the 3 hour drive!  We had such a great time and couldn't have asked for anything better.  Except for maybe Natalie not getting attacked by one of the 54 logs we had to go over or under trying to get to the other lake we were hiking towards.  But she was a trooper and Michelle had a first aid kit so we were all good.  Word to the wise, when Juneteenth creates a 3 day weekend, you will have lots of company camping.  We were glad we came in on Wednesday when we saw all the traffic heading into the mountains as we came back.

Danny had a high school basketball summer tournament he drove himself to while we campers were gone and Hubby returned to work after our family reunion and out of state softball tournament.  I was happy to catch the last day of games and he was happy to nap in the passenger seat on the way home after playing two very hard teams.  Although they are 5A, they were playing all 6A teams and held up well.  I am excited to keep watching this group play together.

I got back from basketball just in time to change my clothes and head to the play Julius Caesar with Hubby, Michelle, and Natalie.  We had to buy tickets after the massive amount of work Michelle put into that play for her Honors English class. I think Natalie regretted coming along because not only was she unfamiliar with the topic but having Shakespeare’s words with “modern” aka distracting costumes and both Brutus and Marc Antony being girls did not help with the story.  But most of us are glad we gave it a try and we all agree CU campus is lovely on a summer night.

With all that we've already had going on in June we decided to keep Father's Day simple this year and give Hubby small gifts and cards and take him and my parents out to eat at one of his favorite restaurants.  We had such a great time with the 8 of us all together and the food and service did not disappoint. In fact, we were surprised by just how cute our dessert was - mochi in the shape of a panda and a corgi.  Our family of six returned to our home with plans of a double header to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Cars and the 25th anniversary of Fast & Furious in June.  However, the projector that Hubby thought he had fixed turned out to be dead as a door nail and he ended up ordering a new one on Father's Day.  Don't worry, it came super fast and by Wednesday night movie night was back with an even better experience thanks to a projector that hasn't been slowly dying for months.  (No white spots for one thing and the higher contrast and better resolution really made it feel more like a movie theater.)

It is not lost on me that I am incredibly lucky to have been raised by a dad that loved and cared about me so purely and deeply and that he is still here on Earth with me to celebrate.  I am also so very lucky to have a husband who is not only wonderful to be married to but also a great partner to parent with.  Happy Father's Day my loves!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
