Mother’s Day and More

A couple hours after Natalie’s softball game it began to hail.  It was quite impressive, to say the least, and difficult to go to sleep after all the excitement. The next day there were piles of ice, blossoms, leaves, and petals laying around. I was grateful I had pulled weeds so I could enjoy my yard before the storm and destruction. Everyone at school seemed a bit tired after the night before. And for days it was gloomy and raining. It was no surprise when softball and baseball was canceled. Well, except for our head baseball coach. One of the moms shared the following meme on the parent group text and let’s just say it was perfect.
I wondered if the weather would clear up and I was pleasantly surprised by some sun and a slight breeze to watch Danny play baseball in. Saturday morning found him and I driving an hour north to play in a double header. Our guys won their first game 9-2.  The wind picked up a little and brought some clouds in during the second game. I had to laugh when a ball flew up in the air and looked like it almost hit a bird because I was so busy staring at the sky I almost missed Danny’s great catch in center field.  Second game ended 6-3 right when the clouds looked like it might begin raining.  We ended up enjoying Comet Chicken for lunch and it’s plain to see that my son enjoys spicy chicken and cities.  I think he’s going to enjoy college someday… maybe too much.
While Danny and I drove north to play ball, Hubby and Kate drove an hour south to meet up with her birth family while her biological grandmother was in town.  I adore all the pictures I was sent but my favorite is actually the candid one that shows Kate’s beautiful post orthodontia smile. Such a gorgeous girl that looks so much like her gorgeous mother and grandmother!
That night Natalie let me show her A League of Their Own in our basement. (I was kind of relieved she really liked it because with older movies it’s hard to tell how much the kids will enjoy what is considered a classic.) The next day was Mother’s Day and I tried to have my middle schoolers join me to watch Gettysburg since Danny is learning about the Civil War right now in US History class but they only lasted an hour… out of 4 hours. Lol. Dan and I totally could have kept watching and even Natalie might have been able to make it to intermission but it did make me wonder how I managed to watch that movie more than once when I was in junior high.

I felt spoiled on Mother's Day from all the effort Hubby, Michelle and Natalie made to buy or make me gifts and create both a delicious breakfast and dinner for me.  Natalie got the idea for the fruit bowl from the game Travel Time we had been playing too much of, Michelle spent hours making me this lovely card, and Hubby spent time on both Saturday and Sunday working so hard to ensure I was well fed and pampered on Mother's Day.  (He was willing to feed my parents too but my mom was sick so that was the end of that.)  Danny gave me a great big hug and told me how wonderful I was and Kate texted me that I could receive a hug at some later date.  lol.  I also got quite the surprise later in the week when a friend, E, emailed me the following: "Thank you so much for being such a light in the world. You point out wonderful things about others and it helps us appreciate so much more in the world."  I'm not sure what brought that on since I've only seen her at work briefly recently but I sure appreciated the message.  I also appreciate the Activity Days leaders that helped Natalie make me paper flowers as a gift.

Monday meant more baseball and it was Hubby's turn to go.  I heard the weather was beautiful and one of the baseball team moms posted this photo on Facebook so I stole it.  Looks lovely to me!

On Tuesday Natalie and I got to attend her lead preschool teacher's retirement party at the park between our house and the school.  It was a milk and cookies even where Miss S got to meet and greet with her former students, parents and coworkers and the kids got to eat cookies and play with friends.  It was a wonderful evening and it was fun for me to talk to those I usually don't get to be around anymore.  I am so grateful for the wonderful preschool experience Natalie had at our local elementary school and the friends she made while she was so young and still enjoys going to school with today.

Between not feeling well and rain we missed quite a bit of baseball and softball the rest of the week.  And then after Canadian wildfire smoke ended up coming our way, I was kind of surprised Danny's baseball tournament didn't get canceled.  There were advisories not to be active outdoors but on we went to Castle Rock to play two games.  (If you look close you might be able to see how the smoke because to clear out as the day went on.) We left in plenty of time in case there was traffic and to make sure Danny got some lunch.  The lucky guy got to have Inta Juice for breakfast and Cane's for lunch.  We ended up being there plenty early and I went in search of eye black at the nearby Big 5 Sporting Goods and got distracted by 5 Below (after purchasing the eye black, of course).  Realizing they still had an hour of warm ups to do and how nice the houses were around us, I headed off to the Goodwill down the street and broke my record of how much money I spent there in one stop.  I had been on the lookout for new Christmas dishes and lo and behold, I found the cutest 8 piece set of Farberware White Christmas 95 and went and grabbed a cart to buy them all (after checking to make sure online I was getting a steal of a deal, which I was).  I also found two shirts and a pair of jeans so felt quite accomplished as I began watching the baseball game.  The first game Danny had two nice catches, one single and one strike out.  The turf was kind of trippy because it was so perfect!  Loss 5-10.  In between game Coach A could tell there was something going on because of his doorbell camera.  He called home and found out his dog had died.  We felt so bad for him and J but somehow they managed to keep playing and coaching.  The second game Danny had a great hit but the other kid had a great catch.  Loss 2-6.  I was really hoping for a miracle home run for J to help make the day a little better for him after such a great loss but no such luck.  Danny and I ate Cafe Rio for lunch and looked around the outlet mall before driving home in the rain.  What a day.

The next day it was Hubby's turn to drive Danny down and cheer the team on and the smoke was much better!  In these pictures other parents took you can actually see a blue sky!

Natalie was a champ and helped me take all the Goodwill stickers off my new Christmas dishes and then since they were called White Christmas Michelle and I put together this puzzle I bought at 5 Below while the three of us watched the movie White Christmas together.  Somehow it seemed to fit in May since we had such a long winter for where we live!  Later we went and enjoyed the backyard and the perfect weather.  I enjoyed pulling weeds even though K's friend asked me how I could enjoy pulling weeds and I said the weather was so nice I didn't care what I was doing as long as I was outside.  I struck those two high schoolers speechless.  Ha!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
