Canceled

I took the following picture on the walk home from D&N's school on Thursday.  These three cute neighbors figured out how to share one scooter.  Little did we know we would get a whole lot of information later that day, including information that would prevent joyful walks home from school.

March 12th has held a lot of different emotions for me for years.  This year I was worried about the news I was hearing about coronavirus & COVID-19 but was still hoping for the best.  On Thursday I sent my children off to school with N having picture day, I did her class's Thursday folders, helping K's language arts teacher at the middle school, dropped off a allergy friendly spice cake for M's teachers as part of their parent teacher conferences when I picked her up from early dismissal, took M  down to Sol Vista to pick up a bigger sized viola, came back to the school just in time for her parent teacher conference, took care of the dogs, and picked up D and N from school like normal as K walked home from middle school as usual.  It was that Thursday that we heard the news that pretty much every event we had on our calendar was canceled.

My sister-in-law Stacie's family would not be coming to visit because the Colorado Crossroads volleyball tournament was canceled.  I got an email saying K's volleyball practice was canceled.  Then Stacie texted back later telling me Disneyland was closing.  Then we heard the news Disney World and Disney Cruise Line was shutting down.  There went our spring break plans!  The hours and hours I spent planning and packing and paying for it all completely down the drain.  There were many tears over the loss of our Disney dreams, especially from my youngest two children.  Disney promised to give us 125% credit for our next cruise, which means we will try again next spring break but all the back to back planning and our Disney World trip were out the window because next year's spring break isn't scheduled to be as long as this years.  Then, as if to make this whole thing feel like a movie, we got the phone call from the local school district that school was canceled until at least after spring break.  Amid all this I simply said to myself, "time to move into summer mode."  If only the weather was the same as summer!

We did have some nice days of weather that allowed us to plant carrots outside and pumpkin seeds indoors or take the dogs to the dog park or scoot or bike around with friends.  D got the news he was accepted to the competitive baseball team he tried out for with practices beginning April 1st but Governor Polis has now declared there will be no school until April 17th.  There is also the recommendation from the Department of Health to not have gatherings of 10 or more people.  I assume they are avoiding the indoor situation and baseball is outdoors but we shall see.

I have been very impressed with my children's teachers jumping into action and sending out work for my children to do.  For the middle school it's pretty easy because all the middle schoolers have iPads and are used to working this way.  The elementary teachers have sent out things to their students too and I must admit I cried the fist time I saw N watching a video of her 1st grade teacher reading them a book.  I'm convinced Mrs. H is the best 1st grade teacher ever. And the look on M’s face when she watched her hip hop teacher’s first dance class via recorded video was priceless. Made my heart smile.  I am also grateful for things like St. Patrick's Day and the children reminding me of our annual scavenger hunt to find the pot of gold (Rolo's).  Luckily I found pre-made clues online that upped our game this year.  Feeling grateful for things like our nice printer and the internet right now!  And that people aren't panic shopping for candy right now because I was a Target on the night of March 16th buying the Rolo's.  It was nice to run into a few friends while there but a little unnerving to see my favorite store completely sold out of milk, shredded cheese and bagels.  Very strange indeed.  After loosing my nerves on Monday afternoon and sought out listening to Jody Moore's mentor's podcast and The Life Coach School Podcast (Brooke Castillo) has been uploading episodes every day dealing specifically with this pandemic.  I am also so grateful I am in the habit of daily scripture/gospel study.  Really keeps my head thinking about what is really important.  Spoiler: it's not keeping the house clean after all!

I think this forced slowing down of society has a lot of potential.  I think it will help us prioritize, be grateful, and apply the teachings President Nelson has been urging us to heed.  I know my children don't seem to be much bothered by all this.  Heck, we were able to plaster M's entire accent wall with pages from a library discarded copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire like she's been wanting to for weeks.  It's not all bad!And along those Harry Potter lines, this has been my favorite meme about the situation so far.  "If Coronavirus was a person."  lol.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
