change & celebration

So, if you really want to mess up your children, do this:  the week before your oldest child begins kindergarten, move to a new house, begin attending church in a different building, and make sure you have a baby too little for anyone else to take care of.  My poor dears all cried over the move.  I was asked several times if we could just go back to the old house after the initial excitement wore off.  Luckily some play dates with old friends seemed to convince them that we could still live here.
Around the time we moved, I enacted a smiley/frowny face system for behavior and told the children they could pick out something from the Disney Store with the money they had earned.  In September my 4-year-old went into debt for the first time... and big time.  This guy owed us 40 smiley faces for this awesome Peter Pan costume.  He has always been helpful, but he sure got a kick out of volunteering to do house work to pay off his debt.  I must say, though, that after that, he hasn't wanted to go into debt to that extent again.  Hopefully he'll remember that lesson for a long time.  I'm trying to convince him to be Peter Pan next Halloween when Natalie will be the right size for Michelle's Tinkerbell costume.
At the rate she's growing, that costume will be just the right size next year.  At 5 months she is almost sitting independently and Dan and the children say she can roll over, but she won't show me, so I'm a skeptic.  She went through quite the period of teething behavior with having to wear a bib and chew on things all the time.  Natalie has two teeth on the bottom that simply refuse to come through.  Poor baby.  But let me tell you, she is one loved little girl that brings a lot of joy to her family.  See the crown Kaelah made her?  Kaelah just can't get enough of the baby she prayed for.I was blessed to have a picnic at the barn park for my birthday.  Marcie D. was nice enough to throw Lisa P. and I the get together, since Lisa and I share our special day.  My mom made sunflower cupcakes and my dad was able to eat with us before heading off to work.
Michelle asked for a purple kitty cake for her half birthday and Grandma Karyl was happy to oblige.  She is thrilled to be 3.5 and closer to Danny in age again.  She is pretty bummed she will always be younger than Kaelah & Danny and that she won't be going to kindergarten next year like her brother. She is trying diligently to be ready for kindergarten and doesn't understand why I can't changer her birthday.  I'm thinking the only thing that will help is if I get her enrolled in the school's preschool program so she only feels left behind 2 days a week.  Fingers crossed we can get in!For this year, we have a co-op preschool on Thursday mornings for Danny and Michelle and Danny goes to Stacey's on Tuesdays.  About half the time Michelle tags along.  I am quite impressed with all she can do.  I thought this was a great silly picture from a picnic at the park.  These are our 3 preschool girls and they get along so well!  So far it has been super easy to teach and is kind of like a fancy play date every week.  Perfect.
I love the expressions on these girls faces.  They can be so happy together.
Speaking of happy together, Dan and I have now been married for 10 years (as mentioned previously in this blog) and felt we could finally take a day in Denver to celebrate once we were unpacked in September.  We saw a Rockies game -- one of Todd Helton's last.  If I was the crying type, I would have shed tears.  This is the only MLB "home team" I've ever had and he has been playing for the Rockies since before we moved here 9 years ago.  After 17 years of playing for the Rockies, #17 is retiring.  So glad we were there to see one of his last home runs in person.  (Later in the month we watched part of his last game on tv.)  We stayed at the Castle Marne bed & breakfast and went to Fornby's Transportation Museum in the morning.  After eating lunch at Cinzetti's shopped at Costco and came home.  Funny how having only one child with you makes life seem like a vacation.  lol.
The fireworks display is the best I've ever seen and made the stadium literally shake.  I tried to cover Natalie's ears but she wouldn't let me.  She was amazed and handled it really well for someone her age.  She received tons of compliments at the game, including ones that said she was the cutest baby there.  We thought so too.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
