Spoiler alert: Final 4 Bound!!! πŸ€

One of the perks of working at your child’s school is that you might be able to catch your daughter performing with the Pops orchestra for the 5th graders during your 10 minute break.  Perfect timing!  I will never get tired of hearing Pirates of the Caribbean performed live.

Happy 7th birthday to Maisie!  We didn’t make a big deal this year but Natalie and I did manage to buy her a special treat at Buc-ee’s on the way home from softball the day before. In dog years, Maisie is now the oldest member of the household. And she has been wonderful about hanging out with me on the sofa as I recover from my broken ankle.  Yes, that ankle that I thought was sprained wasn’t getting better.  X-rays had a spot that looked “fuzzy” so the orthopedic sent me to get a CT scan a few days later.  The CT confirmed that I do indeed have a “small minimally displaced fracture involving the dorsolateral aspect of the talar head.  Small osseous fragments adjacent to the anterolateral aspect of the calcaneus.”  In other words, no surgery but I need to wear a boot for 6 weeks and try to keep weight off that ankle as much as possible.  I felt pretty bad about limping around for almost 2 weeks on a broken bone that is weight bearing and hope I didn’t do too much more damage than my simple stumble down my garage stairs did.

Natalie, Michelle, and I got to go watch the high schoolers put on the musical Newsies and it was phenomenal.  It is so fun to see students you have known for years up there on stage doing such an amazing job.  Most of the performers I knew because of Michelle back in elementary school or from the ward so she had a blast being there to support her friends.  Speaking of friends, we ended up with two extra tickets to the sold out show because I forgot to remind Kate and it turned out Danny’s playoff game was scheduled for the same time so we sold one ticket to Michelle’s friend’s little brother and ended up giving a ticket to a girl from the ward a little younger than Natalie so they both sat with us.  Kind of made me feel like I could have had more children if they had just been spread out a little more age wise.  lol

I’m going a little out of order for the weekend but had to include this cute photo Michelle posted from hiking club. These three stayed after the 6 mile hike to film a commercial for their club!  I had the privilege of driving them to and from the trailhead and I can assure you they are wonderful humans. Also out of order but wanted to note Michelle has been missing school to do neat things with SCLA  and is somehow keeping up her grades!

Back to chronological order. On Saturday Natalie had 3 games for the Tune Up Tournament in beautiful weather!  Hubby took great care of me so I could be there too, complete with camping chair and camping stool to prop up my foot. At one point he even gave me a piggy back ride back to the field from the bathrooms!  I’m one lucky lady to be married to this guy!  The first game had perfect weather and the girls had an impressive victory of 11-2. The second game felt hot for these girls in all black because it almost got to 70°.  That is not typical tune up tournament weather!  Although these teams seemed to be more well matched, Natalie’s team walked away with a 9-3 win. For their 3rd game they faced a pitcher that could pitch much faster than they were used to.  Ended the game 2-7.  But at least they got on the board and they were still placed in the gold bracket for the 2nd day of play.  Hubby took Natalie while I dropped Michelle and her friends off at hiking club and went to Primary.  He texted me that the other team looked like they were twice our 12U team’s size and he was shocked they weren’t playing 14U.  So that was their single elimination and they beat Michelle and I home.  Overall I think it was a good first tournament — and we now know Natalie has outgrown her cleats.  Play It Again Sports, here we come.

In other sports news, our high school boys are tearing up the post season tournament so far.  After they won the before mentioned play off game at home that was at literally the same time as the musical, they traveled about 4 hours and spent the night to play a team ranked much higher than them and won!  While Hubby took Natalie to softball practice that night I went to Dawn’s house and watched the game with some of the other basketball moms.  It was so nice to watch with them.  And so nice that many parents were able to travel and take care of the whole team while they were out of town.  Coming back to town with an invite to the Great 8 was a first in our high school’s history.  Yes, it’s a young high school at 25 years old but that also is a quarter of a century!

Today brought early wake up calls for both our middle children.  Danny was up at 5am to get ready for not only their game but also a team meeting and breakfast at the school provided by the parents at 6:30am.  So  Hubby headed over to the school to bring our chocolate milk contribution and stayed to serve the food and help clean up.  Meanwhile, Michelle was up and ready to go and I was dropping her off at a friend’s house to get a ride an hour north to her Science Olympiad competition.  Originally I was going to volunteer but then Dan was going to take my place and then he ended up going in the afternoon so he could take Natalie and I to the Great 8 basketball game an hour south of us.  Luckily we had time to eat a leisurely breakfast at home before we headed down.  Kate opted to take the “spirit bus” with her friend, A, and a bunch of other students so she left the house even later than us.  Oh, and Michelle made a poster that Hubby and I cheered with since she was sad she couldn’t be in two places at once.  Enough backstory.  The basketball game was amazing!  The other team was from Colorado Springs and these teams were so well matched.  Most of the game there was only a 2 or 3 point difference!  It was so neat to be in a venue like that surrounded by other basketball parents and having the student section there cheering and to have such a close game that felt like came down to B’s free throw baskets at the end.  With a final score of 62-55, SC got to come home with an invitation to the state’s Final Four next week and a plaque to showcase at the school.  So exciting!

Michelle’s Science Olympiad team qualified to go to the state level of competition a few hours later!  Michelle was happy to be there and try out new events different from what she had done last year.  We are proud of all of our children today, whether performing or supporting!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
