Happy Spooky Month + High School Reunion

One of the things I get to do this school year is work in the student store with our sped students and we have one student who is a star worker there.  This month, at the end of helping a customer, she will tell them, "Happy Spooky Month."  I thought this artwork I got to see on the wall of the high school when I went to parent teacher conferences was amazing -- and it turned out to be Kate's.  Actually, I wasn't surprised that she could turn an astronomy assignment into something beautiful.  And I think it goes well with the theme of spooky month even though it's science based.  Said artist got to help celebrate H's birthday and I stole this photo of Instagram to share here.

This photo was also taken by someone else since the photo I took included the principal BUT my favorite volunteer had her eyes closed. She gets that from me... or... she's exhausted from being one of the top volunteers in her leadership program for this school year while maintaining all As in school and getting into the district wide high school honors orchestra!  Somehow she had time to go to the LSO "encore performance" with me as well to watch her old viola teacher, her new viola teacher, her orchestra teacher and Natalie's cello teacher all perform in the local symphony orchestra.

It wouldn't be October without some fall ball photos!  These were from Natalie's last regular season games but there is the end of season tournament and a Halloween tournament to look forward to as well.  And don't worry, she still has time to do things like be our 3rd wheel at Costco on the weekend -- where she found an amazing pumpkin for only $7 and got to eat Cafe Rio with us afterwards -- so that worked out just fine.  We also celebrated her half birthday with cupcakes but since Michelle got away without being sung to a few weeks ago, Natalie got to eat her treats without being sung to as well.

I also got to steal this photo from the middle school website talking about the Socratic Seminar they did in Natalie's language arts class.  From seeing how quiet she was at the Unified Club meeting I helped at, I could totally picture this as she told me about the experience.

The day finally arrived for Danny to get his wisdom teeth removed!  He could have gotten them removed a year ago but since he was only 14 they didn't really want to put him under anesthesia yet.  Then we tried to get them removed this summer so he wouldn't miss school but the wildfire smoke had made him so congested that the surgery was canceled at the last minute due to safety concerns (after we were there).  So my son got to miss school to get all drugged up and apparently he really liked the anesthesia!  He was talking the entire way home and literally running around when telling me about how he wanted to run away from the needle for the IV.  He even said he got tricked because they asked him to calm down when Danny said he didn't want the IV and they told him they were just putting an oxygen mask on him and then the next thing he knew he was waking up.  At least I think that is what Danny was trying to tell me.  With all that gauze and blood in his mouth plus being a little loopy I wasn't quite sure but I can tell you that this kid was VERY entertaining on the way home and when we first got home.

The next day found Michelle and I leaving Danny and the rest of the family behind to go to my 25th high school reunion. I had never been able to attend before but this year lined up with a four day weekend in our school district so I got to go!  Of course I didn’t think Danny could travel the day after and Hubby had to stay behind to take care of him and help Natalie get to her end of season softball tournament that weekend. Kate was going to come too but changed her mind when she realized how early in the morning we would need to leave to make it to the parade line up in a different time zone.  Michelle was a great traveler and came home very grateful to live where we do!  You should have seen how excited she was to catch an outline of the mountains on our drive home. I had a wonderful time even though it was very short. I am so thankful for the people I went to high school with and am so proud of the wonderful people they are and what they have decided to do.  Nothing is better than being in real life with people and I’m already hoping I can make it back to Kansas in five years for the 30th!

This was my list of “Must Dos” for Michelle and I can’t say she was impressed with any of them but like I said, she did come home grateful for the place she has grown up. Good choice, Hubby!!!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
