Sports + Music + Ren Festival

The weather got toasty just in time for a softball game at the field where Natalie's team practices.   These girls proved that they can handle over 90* weather wearing all black and still win.  I didn't have the best view because after a few minutes in the hot sunshine I decided to keep to the shade but when I did try to capture Natalie at first base (she also played left, center, and second during this game) you can see how well the sun was shining.  At least the hip hop dance class she went to that morning had air conditioning.

The weather was perfect for Michelle's 9am match -- her first one out of town -- but it was getting a little warm on the court by the time they ended with a tie breaker at almost 11am!  This was such a fun and neat experience!  As a bonus, there was an In-N-Out burger nearby where we got to have an early lunch (to avoid the crowds) and an outlet mall in the next parking lot over.  We got her some great things at the GAP outlet and I found some linen pants perfect for summer next door at BR.  We left in time to head home and pick Natalie up from babysitter's training (that Hubby had dropped her off at in the morning).  She has now been through the exact same training all of her older siblings did before they were allowed to be left home alone for longer than an hour.  Of course, she's probably right when she says she won't get a babysitting job for years because her older sisters are both such great neighborhood babysitters.

In wonderful news, Danny is done with summer school and passed his 9th grade language arts class required for graduation with an entire day of school to spare so go to stay home that morning and sleep in.  This was not an enjoyable experience for him and I am proud that he was able to get back on track, ready to begin his sophomore year without that burden on his shoulders anymore.  I truly hope this next school year is more enjoyable for him than the last.  Now he has even more time to spend with friends and send me texts with videos of him doing dangerous things like awesome flips on trampolines.  If it had been more fun to wake him up in the morning, I would probably feel comfortable with him going to more summer school to help keep him out of trouble.  But club basketball is starting up again so at least he'll have something on the calendar the next couple of weeks.

Speaking of basketball, a couple of days after he went to the doctor for a check up (pictured here was brunch at First Watch afterwards), Danny got to play in a one day “tournament” with his high school.  They played some amazing teams and that’s exactly how you get better!  We were making fun of how it was simply a triple header and that baseball tournaments were a very different experience.  It has been so strange to not see him play baseball this summer.  I feel like I’m forgetting something, almost like phantom pain.

Which brings me to Natalie’s final tournament of the season.  We started with a double header on Monday, which the girls played well and were able to pull off two wins 7-0 & 8-7.  With being a double elimination tournament, we then knew they would be playing one game on Wednesday and one, two, or three games on Thursday.  It made me smile that when I told Natalie that yes, we could go see Inside Out 2 on Tuesday and did she want to bring anyone with us, it was A.  These girls can play softball three days a week and still want more time together and I am here for it!  Wonderful movie, btw.  I personally liked it more than the original.

On Wednesday it was Hubby’s turn to take Natalie and boy, what a time they had. A thunderstorm had come through, delaying previous games and causing their 8pm game to begin over an hour later. You should have seen hour tired Natalie was when she came to say goodnight to me at 11:15pm (since this venue is about a 60 minute drive there and 45 minute drive home depending on the time).  This team does like playing on turf so they don’t mind the drive and usually do well at these fields but they got beat pretty good 0-9.  On Thursday we played in the first games of the day so no delays but after a nail biter (so close at 4-6), these girls were done playing together.  It’s definitely not how they wanted to end the season, and there may have been a teardrop or two shed in my car on the way home, but oh, how we have loved this softball team!  These coaches and these players and families have been amazing.  Four of the girls are aging out, Natalie included, and we are so sad to leave this wonderful experience behind.  But, which was so very nice of them, the coaches threw the girls an end of season party at the Main Event where they got to go bowling, play laser tag, play arcade games, eat pizza and cake, and exchange small gift and cards.  They had so much fun and there were so many cute hugs!  I didn’t want to be a creeper  or cramp Natalie’s style so I ended up checking out the nearest Goodwill and Arc thrift stores with still having lots of time to talk to a few of the parents.  I will miss this team too!

Michelle is home!  During the basketball and softball tournament week our middle daughter was at the music camp she attended last summer and loved.  Sounds like she had a great time again this year!

Hubby got to drop Michelle off at orchestra camp while Natalie and I got to hear a missionary homecoming talk and I subbed her primary class again.  We were thrilled that she got to be roommates with one of her good friends this summer and recognized quite a few of the campers.  Natalie and I told her how much we would miss her and she promised to FaceTime us, which she did the very first night.  It was so cute to see Natalie hug my phone goodbye when it was time to hang up.  It was so great to hear her stories and see smiles like this taken by another camper. I’m glad she had such a wonderful time. I truly wished I could be in two places at once Thursday night while I was at Natalie’s last softball game and Hubby was at Michelle’s end of camp performance. He did a great job taking video for me, though!  I am so grateful for him and for all we are able to do for our children as a team.

And after all that excitement, Hubby and I took the children who love the Renaissance Festival back after missing last summer.  The weather was perfect and the crowds were impressive and we had a wonderful time. Word to the wise: get there BEFORE it opens or else it might take an hour to exit the interstate and park like it did for us!  And don’t see the new “Witch Trial” show if you have children with you. But “Blades and Bravery” and “ Jacques ze Whipper” were great 100% of the time “Craic” and “London Broil” jugglers were great even from a distance.  I would call “Zilch, the Torysteller” good brain exercise too. And eating Steak on a Steak is a must for lunch with the cinnamon almonds for an afternoon snack.  The crowd and artisan creativity wowed once again and it was great to be there.  Of course, we should have taken photos on the way in instead of the way out because it was very dusty. I had to crop out our feet because I wore sandals and they were literally so dirty. lol

And what was Kate up to, since I don’t have any photos of her?  Lots of spending time with friends and babysitting and a dentist appointment that I got to take her to get a smoothie afterwards.  It is great when I get to spend time with her, even if it’s for the dentist!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
