Home and Away (Not the Show)

We got Michelle’s photos back from her photo shoot with her viola!  I love them so much and Rebecca Mabey is truly an artist. I can’t wait to have my other kids take pictures with her too.

Natalie started going to “Dyslexia Base Camp” through the school district. It is Mondays - Thursdays in June but she’ll have an escape in the middle. I was so happy when I picked her up that first day and Natalie reported that her day was better than she thought it would be. They call their teacher Mr. T-Rex (sounds perfect for 10 year olds), Natalie was happy to be learning the cups song in music class, and she really liked the dyslexic kids from high school who help out.  This doesn’t mean she wants to go to summer school instead of playing with her friends but it does mean she’s willing to get out of bed and go in the mornings.

Danny’s baseball game an hour away was canceled due to thunderstorms, which meant I got to watch Natalie’s softball game instead of going with A’s family.  It was a joy to watch her play with perfect weather and some great hitting, fielding, and running. It was a low scoring game, 2-3, but all the girls seemed happy.

Danny was more than happy to go watch the newest Spider-Man movie in the theater with C instead. Turns out half price Tuesdays are a thing again and if you buy your ticket in person you don’t have to pay the app’s convenience fee. I’ll have to remember that.  While the boys were at the movie theater and Natalie and I were at the field, Kate had friends over to watch stuff in our basement.  It was fun to see some of her friends I hadn’t seen for a while. I also got to thank W for recommending I read Defending Jacob before watching the show.

Hubby entertained us when he was walking/jogging around the National Mall by sending us pictures and asking us questions.  His plan to arrive at the airport before Michelle worked well. He ate dinner, waited for her to arrive and was at the gate when she exited the plane. I lucked out not needing to go to the airport either direction!  It was great having them both home again. Seriously, home just doesn’t feel like home when 2/6 people are out of town.

The next day I got to hear all about New York City. It sounds like an absolutely amazing trip with lots of memories made. Lots of tourist stuff like Rockefeller Center and the Statue of Liberty but also a tour of Madison Square Garden and the before mentioned meeting with a Broadway professional. Michelle said she liked the shows best (Blue Man Group and Chicago) and the most impactful place was Ground Zero. She got to know friends better and even became friends with 8th graders she used to be scared of because they seemed so serious. Turns out there hilarious once you get to know them. I am so glad Michelle had this opportunity!

We also got her dance recital photos back and I am grateful to have good ones from her last recital.  It was a joy to see her perform Kim Possible for the first (and only) time, perform Girls for the final time, and dance with her Dad.

Natalie and I rushed to the show straight from her softball game.  They had some good plays but those Fire Dragons were able to pull off the win.  We were a few minutes late so missed the first two numbers and were grateful they still let us in.  I was also grateful my dad could take the day off work and that Danny’s friend’s dad/one of his coaches could take him to his baseball tournament for us so that we could watch Michelle perform for the last time.  My mom wasn’t feeling well so hopefully the dance studio will make the videos available to watch later.

Danny was thrilled to hit a triple at his tournament but also took a fastball to the helmet, which resulted in a bit of disorientation at first base and a headache for the rest of the day and into the next.  His coaches had him sit in the dugout instead of being in the outfield the rest of the game and fully understood when I decided to keep him home day two of the tournament.  We wanted him to rest and stay off the screens so decided to fulfill one of his birthday wishes by painting his room.  He was sick of the bright blue that he’s had since he was in 4th grade and wanted it Simply White in order to decorate it with lots of different things.  It’s definitely different and he seems happy with the new three coats of paint.  It looks pretty bare right now but he will slowly be buying things with lawn mowing money to make it teenager worthy.

Michelle noticed that she was having trouble seeing things far away so we took her back to the optometrist for the first time in a couple years.  She went from being a little far sighted to a little near sighted and is going to try out contacts.  Michelle also got to have her measurements taken with a fancy new contraption on its first day of use.  Lol.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
