Our marriage is old enough to vote now

After watching a Rix Road Trips video where they went ATVing I told Hubby we HAD to go the next time we were in Florida so he found a way for us to go try in the mountains near home.  My mom babysat and Hubby took the day off work so we could have an adventure for our 18th anniversary.
I was so nervous that I was more than happy to go right behind our guide and then Hubby followed me.  Behind him was a college age woman and then a father and son duo from Massachusettes.  It was actually easier than I thought it would be and soon I was feeling grateful for childhood horseback riding lessons because I automatically moved the way I needed to, such as leaning while going uphill.  The best part was what they called a "playground."  It was kind of like an obstacle course the guide took you through and was crazy exhilarating and an absolute blast.  That's when wearing clothes that we didn't care about came in handy.  The fact that it began raining was also great so we could get muddy and rained on.  I think going on a hot, sunny day would have been much less enjoyable. Of course, we did stop by a wonderful little waterfall and even got to go a little ways inside an abandoned mine.  It did not take long to walk far enough to be in total darkness and feel the cold.

On our way back I was thinking how much my son would love this when he was older and Hubby later said he was thinking we should buy a couple ATVs and then the other woman on the tour got really close to the edge, panicked, and sent her ATV down the mountain.  Luckily, she wasn't hurt at all.  It really is something to hear and then see a 12,000$ machine rolling and rolling and rolling until it finally comes to a stop.  I felt so sorry for this woman who obviously didn't read the waiver she signed because I knew right away what that price tag was.  The tour guide was trying her best to remain calm and keep the woman calm so wouldn't talk numbers so I whispered the info to Hubby because he didn't have his glasses on when we signed and he knew I had read the paperwork.  It was then we decided that no, we weren't going to bring our son there when he turned 16 and no, we weren't going to buy any of our own.  Poor girl.  It certainly made for a good story when we got home to my mom and the children.  We, of course, led off with the ATV rolling down the mountain and my mother was very relieved that it wasn't one of us that had to pay the bill.  Me too.  That would have been the most money we had ever spent on an anniversary by A LOT.  I hope they were able to work something out and I was grateful Hubby had cash to tip our guide.  She definitely earned it.

Not pictured: the two of us dressed up nicely to eat at the Cracovia Polish-American Restaurant on our way home and being all lovey dovey after our adventure.  We've been meaning to try this Polish restaurant for years, literally, and were happy to cross it off our wish list.  Also not pictured, Hubby and I deciding to postpone our Hawaii trip once again due to what we heard from my mission friend in Honolulu, the Delta variant, lack on immunizations, and the fact that so far NCL is only letting fully vaccinated passengers on board (which I'm all for except we would have to leave our youngest two children home).  I'm also glad our DCL cruise from 2020 isn't until next year because Disney came out with guidelines about double testing, being required to purchase travel insurance, and wearing masks anytime you are indoors and not in your stateroom or actively eating while on the boat.  Although we didn't mind any pandemic guidelines while we were at the Orlando theme parks last fall or in Virginia for spring break, that just does not sound fun for a cruise ship.  I don't know why.  We'll see what happens and I'm sure we will eventually get on a large ship of some sort and have a wonderful time no matter what the rules are.  Just not in 2021.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
