Fourteen and Fabulous

Happy birthday to the wildly talented and brilliant K!  She had very simple requests this year.  Seen here is the shirt Hubby bought her because I refused (lol) and one of the French pastries we purchased at a bakery together instead of birthday cake for when my parents came over to celebrate.  The next day E, A, A, & I came over to wish Kate a happy birthday and ate (freshly fetched from across town) Dunkin' Donuts instead of birthday cake.  Is birthday cake no longer teenager approved?  Not pictured: the Air Pods she knew she was getting but we wouldn't admit to until she opened them.  I wish you the best 365 days yet, K!  May 14 years old be everything you want it to be.
Most of the fun my oldest has had this summer there is no photographic evidence for but once in a while I get lucky to have someone else take a picture or at least suggest it. The first one is so precious to me. We had a wonderful time meeting this young man and his mom by eating Menchie’s and walking around the nature trails at the Butterfly Pavilion. He is Kate's biological half brother on her dad's side and this was the first time we got to meet!  Sometimes people are just so easy to love.  I am grateful his mom made this all possible by creating time for us while they were visiting our state.  I hope that someday these two will become great friends and be there for each other when they need someone who understands.  And how neat it happened to be so close to her birthday to make that first connection.
The next picture is from one of the many times Kate went to our favorite outdoor pool with friends. This was a day time visit with E's family but K has gone a lot this summer.  Our town offers a middle school night that I swear hundreds of middle schoolers show up to every week.  Sometimes I wish my town had offered ‘middle school night’ back when I was in junior high because it looks straight up crazy but sounds so fun.
YW outdoor game night at the O's house was a big success.  (Here they are having s'mores.)
This is also a picture I love that has a first time meeting someone special to us and easy to love.  Part of K's days long birthday celebration was to eat at a nice Italian restaurant with her beautiful birth mother and her husband, whom we had never met before.  I loved seeing the two of them together.  C & N make a great team and will be celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary next summer.  Hooray!  Kate was an absolute delight and loved the presents C picked out for her.  The next day K was more than happy to clean and reorganize her room to display her new gifts.  They both have a great eye for beauty!
According to the board on our office wall, Kate has grown and inch and a quarter in the last year.  She really wants to be taller than that, especially for playing volleyball, so she is hoping to grow more at age 14.  And what better to show you're growing up than getting phase two of braces put on just two days after your birthday? Her teeth really hurt and Kate only let me take a picture after I reminded her how big the check I just wrote was.  Let's just say we went straight to Inta Juice for smoothies and then went back the next day because those Choco-o-nutter smoothies are the absolute best in situations like this.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
