Volleyball, baseball, dance & softball

There was more than once I was invited to do something on a Tuesday or Thursday recently that I had to decline due to all the sports we had going on! There were a couple times I would drop Danny off a few minutes early at baseball practice so that Natalie would only be a few minutes late to softball practice while my mom drove Michelle and our neighbor to dance class and A's parents took Kate along to volleyball practice.  It is a relief that softball and volleyball didn't overlap for very long but I am so happy they all had something they liked doing and that others were around to help me make it work.  President Nelson said in the last General Conference to be sure to not get too busy again and I can see why.  Thank goodness the children have three day weekends every week or else this would be stressful instead of fun.  We are already wondering how to proceed next year when the schools are planning on being open five days a week again.
For most of the season, due to Covid-19, parents were not allowed to watch volleyball games and teams were divided into two groups instead of the usual one, causing spread out tournaments that could be early in the morning or late in the evening but always long.  The last two tournaments Hubby and I were excited to go see our girl play.  Hubby remembered to bring the camera for the first one, getting lots of great pictures, and then somehow the alarm I thought I had set didn't go off so at the last minute Hubby got to take Kate to her last tournament too because, let's face it, if you're running late you want him in the driver's seat.  I'm glad Kate was able to play another year after the last season being abruptly terminated.  We are at the point of the pandemic where we just take what we can get and realize disappointment is not lethal.

The one and only real team photo taken all season.  They actually photo shopped individual photos for the team photo earlier in the season so all the girls were the same height!  The team celebrated the end of the season at the lake with paddle boards and sand volleyball and the next weekend Kate and three of her friends were able to have a slumber party on a trampoline.  It sounded so fun!  I'm glad the weather was nice enough to enjoy before the rain came in (but now the grass is super green and looks beautiful).

Danny's baseball team had to cancel going to a tournament because one of the boys tested positive for Covid.  When it was decided they could be together if they were outdoors with masks on (which I felt fine with because his test came back negative), we got the messages from the middle school that our boy had to quarantine due to an exposure in the classroom and not allowed to go to school or activities for a week. Once again Danny had no symptoms and tested, again, negative to Covid.  So the girls, both times, were allowed to carry on as normal and luckily the weather was nice enough to keep the windows open while we were waiting for test results.  He was so grateful to get the good news about not having it because having to wear a mask around the house all day was not fun. The above photo was taken before first game back with the team (yes, I begged) and he played well! He was even able to make a home run but he would be eager to tell you it’s because the fielders were terrible.

Michelle and her hip hop crew were in for a surprise when one of the girls on their team never showed up to their last competition.  Another girl took over the special part that teammate usually performed and they did a great job even with missing someone.  In fact, they even got a special shout out from one of the judges and received the "Moving & Grooving" award along with their Elite High Gold status.  I was so surprised and worried and then so proud of how well they did adjusting.  Honestly, being ok with a change of plans might be one of the best lessons we have learned from the pandemic.

We had a couple happy surprises for Natalie's softball season as well.  My dad's work ended up sponsoring her team and their business name is on the back of all those cute dark purple jerseys.  It just so happened when I asked my dad if I could talk to his manager about it, my dad let me know that corporate had just encouraged their managers to become more involved in the community.  Perfect timing!  Another surprise was that after Natalie's first scrimmage we realized she had outgrown her bat.  When she and Hubby came home from the sporting goods store she had gone up from 24" to 26" and now her bat looks different from the other girls' Easton bats.  Score!  She was thrilled to go out and practice in the backyard with it.  (Funny thing was, we had saved a 25" bat of Danny's for her but she skipped right over that size.) Natalie’s first official  game was using her new bat and was also the first softball game played at the renovated Bohn Park. AND her school teacher was there to see it! No surprise here that she won teacher of the year at our elementary school! I am thrilled to hear she will remain at our school.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
