A Magical, Mishap Time

Happy birthday early to my favorite son!  D wanted to keep his birthday party simple:  play with friends and watch a movie.  Once he decided on a Harry Potter film we sent out the invites.  I let him invite everyone he wanted, thinking only half the boys would be able to come.  (D actually ended up leaving his baseball game early to get ready for the party.)  Most of his friends could come so we ended up with prepping a party for 16 boys!  What do you do with 16 boys for that long?!?

Quidditch.  The answer is quidditch.  6 hula hoops and 18 pool noodles from the dollar store; marker discs, 3 dodge balls (these modern ones are nice — way less painful — I tested them on Danny and a neighbor!), and 6 head wraps from Target; 6 construction comes, 6 t joints and 3/4” pipe, and rebar from Home Depot. Whew! At least we already owned a volleyball!

Sorting hat and brick wall for Platform 9 &  3/4 borrowed from a friend sorted the boys into Slytherin or Gryffindor for the game we had set up out back.
Little sisters provided an impromptu cheering squad and Target provided a really big cake that was half vanilla and half chocolate.  And there wasn't even a piece left over for the dad of the birthday boy, who had been busy making butter beer.

D's friends were so thoughtful and generous.  I had a very happy 9 year old that day!

I could have used a little magic for sweet N.  During the birthday party Hubby was getting a bowl out of the cupboard for K and accidentally bumped a mug off the shelf.  Somehow that mug managed to cut N on the way to the floor and she needed stitches at Urgent Care.  Luckily Dan could tell right away (he's had plenty of stitches while I have zero experience) and took her there, where there was no one in line.  They were back before the birthday party even ended and many the boys didn't even notice they had left.  So, my 5 year old is my first child to get stitches!

A shout out to my true love for being such a good dad.  While I subbed in primary he sat with M for a while to cheer her up.  Primary isn't really my kids' thing now that I'm not in the presidency any more.

K got to dog watch for the first time.  She discovered a great way to keep the dog entertained.  Sit on the porch with him while he stares at the rabbit.  It was a funny sight to see.  And somehow the rabbit knew there was nothing to be afraid of.  We know Marshmallow doesn't feel that way about the dog that lives next door!

K wanted to be there for N during N's wound check.  She definitely doesn't want to be a nurse or doctor, though.  K feels stitches are pretty gross to look at.  I'm super grateful the nurse ripped those band aids off for me because I know N would have taken a long time to forgive me if I had done it!  Later that day Hubby, K and D got on an airplane to join in on family reunion fun.  M, N, and I had a few things left to do before we left town.  M still had school but also had both an optometrist appointment (now all 4 of my children have prescription glasses!) and an orthodontist appointment.  M had a some permanent teeth coming in behind baby teeth that were refusing to make room.  She could no longer wear her Healthy Start device.  We went in to the office thinking they would make a fix to the device but were instead told that she needs 4-6 baby teeth pulled later in June.  It was pretty awful news.  Luckily there was a Menchie's near by to help dry those tears.

M's attended the last 3 full days of school before we joined the rest of the family in CA.  Here she is with a bunny she knitted and flower's for the substitute teacher on the last full day.  The girls were so excited to get on the airplane we left straight from the school.  It was pretty neat for me to only have two children to take care of for a couple days but boy, would that get boring.  It was pretty fun to all wearing matching clothes the day we went to the orthodontist though.  No way I could get anyone else in the family to do that.  lol.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
