Labor Day weekend

What fun it is to have a three day weekend!  On Friday Hubby got to take our youngest to a make-up swimming lesson since there would not be classes on Monday.  This was his first time getting to see her in her Fun Day 2-year-old class.  K and M had a class too -- dance class, as usual, in the afternoon.  On Saturday we worked hard to get everything done we needed to in the morning so we could watch the BYU season opener on tv.  Boy, what a game!  What a sweet victory to beat Nebraska on their home turf after our starting quarterback was injured.  And in the last few seconds of the game with a hail mary pass by a backup true freshman quarterback.  It's so fun to be proud of your alma mater, especially when the neighbor boy is over and talking Nebraska trash.   (:  (What was even more amazing is that another hail mary pass won the next game for BYU as well.)

On Sunday we had a great dinner that included my parents, my cousin Jessica and her husband Sam, and the missionaries.  Since the Elders needed fed, why not turn it into a big deal?  Jess made some great gluten and dairy free cupcakes for me as well and everyone loved them!  It is so fun having family live close by.  (They just moved here this summer so Sam could begin a new career at the local university.)  I have got to learn to take pictures of events like these.  Sometimes it is the more common things that make life so enjoyable.
With a day off work and school, we decided to fulfill our children's dream of visiting the Aquarium again.  By the time we got down there they were ready to eat lunch at the aquarium restaurant.  It is such a neat place with views of the giant walls of water from your table.  At one point the mermaids came and did a show in one of the pools.  My kids were so happy after taking a very long time to each lunch there that they didn't even care if we went inside the aquarium.  We looked around the lobby and the outside and they all chose to pick out a small souvenir instead -- saved us about $70!  We decided to head to Costco (but it was closed) and ended up playing with the neighbors outside.  lol.

Dinner was more eventful than we are used to.  As we ate, D began to complain it was difficult to chew his food because he had a loose tooth (his first).  K informed him that she had had a loose tooth that was bothering her for a very long time and it wouldn't be fair if he lost his first.  I began to tease them about how we could pull their teeth.  I suggested we tie a string to each tooth and let them run away from each other.  D was all for it but K squirmed and wanted to scream just thinking about it.  Eventually D just reached in his mouth and pulled his tooth out.  We were astonished, especially K!  Way to get things done, boy!  Well, after dinner K decided enough was enough and after 15 minutes of trying to decide whether to let me do it or not, she let me pull her tooth.  It was so loose it only took the slightest bit of effort on my part to get it out.  What an accomplishment for her to let me do that.  I felt so honored.  So that night we had two of our children loose a tooth.  I kept wondering what the odds of that were?!?  I thought it was pretty neat.  And now K trusts me to pull teeth.  The next tooth she lost she woke me up at 2am and asked me to pull it.  It took a little more effort since I was half asleep but it came out and we were both able to go back to sleep.  When I asked the tooth fairy to bring the customary 2 golden $1 coins, the tooth fairy felt that if I had to wake up in the middle of the night for the extraction said child should not be rewarded.  I couldn't argue with that.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
