Birthday Interview

Some birthdays hit me more than others.  I was grateful to make it to this one after hearing of a fellow mommy's sudden death.  Wow.  That's a depressing way to begin something.  Yet, that fact is one reason I wanted to do the following post.  I am going to answer questions I found online and leave it as a bit of family history and a snapshot of me when entering my late 30s.

Where are you now? Sitting at my beloved iMac wondering when the footsteps I hear upstairs will come downstairs to find me.

What is the date? September 13.  Yes, I'm late as usual.

What is the weather like? Cool with a touch of puffy clouds.

What’s the last movie that you saw? Thor.  Hubby and I are slowly watching the Marvel universe in chronological order and it is so much more fun this way!

Who are you in love with? Hubby.  Who is your best friend?  Same answer!

What do you wish you could own right now? A Disney Vacation Club membership I didn't have to pay for!

What do you want your next vacation to be? Oahu -- Aulani

What are you most worried about? 3 of my children adjusting to the new school year.  M loves it so I don't have to worry about her!

What is one amazing thing you expect to do in the coming year? Take a family trip to somewhere my kids have never been before.

What is your favorite recent memory?  Watching D and M hold N's hands as they walked away from the school building.  She was so happy to pick up her older siblings from school!

What made you laugh the hardest most recently?  On Labor Day -- our conversation about loose teeth.  (That will be in the next blog post.)

What are your wishes for the upcoming year?  That my children will do well and enjoy school.  That my husband will be one year closer to his master's degree.  That I can potty train N and keep the house clean.  I've been doing better with that!

What do you think you will be doing this time next year?  Next year will be very different because I will have two mornings a week to do as I wish for a couple hours.  I will miss having a little one around me 24/7 but I know N will love preschool.

What’s your favorite book and why? The Book of Mormon.  Although the Bible, especially the New Testament, is near and dear to my heart, I sometimes have to wonder if all the writings of people like Paul were translated correctly.  I think the Book of Mormon is much easier to understand the feel the power of the Holy Ghost while reading it.  That book of scripture has brought me closer to Jesus Christ, especially in times of need, than any other person, place, or thing.

What’s your favorite movie and why?  I have the fondest recollection of Return of the Jedi.  I remember that movie blowing my mind as a kid and enjoying every minute I spent with crayons and my Return of the Jedi coloring book after watching the movie.  Of course, I may have Star Wars on the brain since our Halloween costumes arrived in the mail yesterday.  (:

What have been the biggest news events during your lifetime?  Falling of the Berlin Wall.  I remember my dad asking me to come watch the news, telling me I wouldn't understand the significance now, but that later I would understand just how important it was.  I would have to say 9/11 as well.

If you could travel into the future, would you rather see something that specifically relates to you, or something that relates to the future of the country in general? Why?  It would be nice to see if my children ended up happy in their teenage or adult lives but often the future is something we are protected from to make sure it does not alter our choices.

If you could have three wishes, what would they be?  1.)  Sleep!  I want to get uninterrupted sleep so I have the energy I greatly miss.  2.)  Move getting in shape to a priority in my life.  Right now it is most certainly not.  3.)  Never have anyone in my house be sick or have any physical ailment again!  Ok, that sounds really selfish.  I supposed if I was a better person I would have thought: 1.) World peace 2.) Everyone in the world to have their basic needs met 3.) for everyone to enjoy the blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.  Yes, better late than never.  (:

If you won $1 million tomorrow, what would you do with the money?  Well, I'm sure the government would take half, but we could still pay off the house and go on some great vacations and buy hubby the new car he has wanted for years.  And donate some to the Perpetual Education Fund, the Missionary Fund, and the Humanitarian Aid fund.

What’s the highest honor or award you’ve ever received?  Most Spirited Award when I was on the high school tennis team.  To me, it was an award for being nice to everyone on both the varsity and JV teams.

What’s the most memorable phone call you’ve ever received?  My mind travels to being on the phone in Grandma W's dinning room, hearing that I needed to go to Minneapolis if I wanted to say good-bye to my grandmother before she died.  I still miss my mom's mother.  I wish she could still give me advice and sympathize with me.  Of my 4 grandparents, I seem to be the most like her and she was the last grandparent I had on this earth.

What Was The Most Important Thing You’ve Done So Far?  Go on a full time mission.

When Was The Last Time You Cried?  When I felt overwhelmed at bedtime a couple weeks ago.  Dan was at his class and N was crying she was so tired but couldn't sleep because K was literally bouncing off the walls and being as loud as she possibly could.  I will be so glad when he is done with his master's degree!

What Is The Best Thing That Could Happen To You Right Now?  A free part time maid/cook!

What’s The First Thing You Do In The Morning? Usually I reach over to my phone to see what time it is.  Then I decide whether to get out of bed or check my email and Instagram feed.  D and N are usually the first ones awake and often want breakfast as soon as possible, so that's usually the first thing I do once I'm out of bed -- feed them!

What Are You Thinking Just Before Going To Bed?  That I've stayed up too late again!

If There’s One Thing In Your Life You Want To Change Right Now, What Is It? My overreaction to so many things -- part of being a sensitive person -- hard to change that.

Sum Up Your Life In One Sentence:  Stay at home mom.

Name The Thing That Annoys You The Most:  Ingratitude.

What Makes You Laugh?  My husband, the tv show Friends, Marvel movies, retro movies like Monkey Business.

Picture Yourself In 5 Years From Now
Wow.  Instead of having my oldest in 2nd grade, my youngest will be in 2nd grade.  I will have 2 in middle school and a 5th grader as well.  I assume I'll be volunteering or working as a PARA at the elementary school and trying to keep track of everyone's differing schedules and homework and activities.  I assume I'll have some time to run errands, clean the house, exercise, and catch up on all the digital scrapbooks and videos I haven't been making.  Perhaps we might have a nice dinner made more often.  We can always hope!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
