San Diego

After 3 days in a row of amusement parks we were very ready to relax at our beach house in San Diego. We played in the bay and let the kids watch tv while we did laundry and one of us went grocery shopping. M preferred the bay because it didn't have big waves and K and D disapproved for the same reason.  A couple days later we went to the Pacific Beach with big waves and had a grand time. N was much more courageous this time with the ocean and I would literally have to pull her out of the water when she got too cold and force her to warm up in a towel. Reminded me of my son's first beach vacation when he was a year old!

My children were pretty surprised at just how amazing Sea World was. There is just something about being able to have cleaner fish nibble you, pet a shark, feed a flamingo, and see dolphins and other creatures swim right in front of you. The shows were great and my kids really got the message not to litter or waste water.

June gloom was encountered and worked around. Saturday we visited the Mormon Battalion Visitor's Center before the sun broke through. We liked it so much we had children begging for more so we walked down the street to eat and took the tour a second time. (K liked the Cafe Coyote restaurant near by so much she had a dream that we went back and ate there again.) I am just so amazed by what it took to be an 1840s pioneer. I am grateful for those generations that came before us and very grateful I was born when and where I was!

The next day we toured the USS Midway.  Well, we saw a lot of it. No wonder why they call them a floating city. I just stared at that ship as we walked away, trying to wrap my head around the idea that it was made in the 1940s.  How the world changed in 100 years!  We were exhausted by the time we got back to the beach house and opted for the bay since it was closer. The clouds never went away that day and the water was cold but everyone still had a good time and could play at the park at the end of Fanuel street.  It did make it a little easier to say good-bye to the beach house the following day too.

After packing up we had some time to visit the grounds of the San Diego Temple, eat at California Fish Grill and visit one of my former mission companions before heading to the airport. K and M got to hold her precious new baby boy. What a joy to hear those little baby sounds. We stayed a bit too long for the big city traffic but it turned out our flight was delayed an hour so we had plenty of time to feed the children dinner after all. Score.

It was bittersweet to leave CA. We had a great time visiting amazing places, but it isn't home. D missed his friends and K missed her house. I think M was just ready to relax and N actually asked to go home more than once by saying, "Go house."  They all were great travelers, though. Wonderful on the plane and at the airport even though it was way past their bedtime by the time we reached the mini van. I am so proud of them.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
