5 weeks

Has it really been 5 weeks since I wrote anything down?  Here we go again:

All went well at N's one year check-up.  Well, she would argue that it was fun until they shot her in the legs!  N is tall and skinny like her Daddy -- no big surprise there.  I notice every time I bathe her or change her clothes.  The doctor encouraged me to move N out of our room to help her sleep better. We did so -- she's sleeping every night in M's room now.  At first she couldn't sleep without the doll she picked out at IKEA for her birthday.  I love finding her in different positions.  The new arrangement doesn't seem to help her sleep any better but we can blame that on her trying to cut her 2nd upper front tooth.  She has the hardest time teething out of all of our children!  N also took her fist steps right after having her birthday, but she chooses not to use that option very often.  Usually she can get mom or dad or K or D or the neighbors to carry her or using her scoot/crawl is faster.  She has also mastered the art of sipping through a straw.  Here she is acting all grown up when we ate Chick-Fil-A at Grandma and Grandpa's house one day.  She reminds me of D in that she wants to "catch up" and do everything her older siblings are doing.  K and I wish we could keep her this age forever.
One of the events that sticks out in my mind the most of the recent weeks is K skateboarding accident.  It was the day after N's check-up.  Here's a bit copied from an email I sent:

I kept Kaelah home from kindergarten on Friday. On Thursday afternoon, while I was at the chiropractor, Kaelah was at home with my mom and fell off our neighbor's skateboard. She didn't break anything but it was scary. Our next door neighbor is a nurse and checked her for us instead of going to urgent care. So grateful. Her face is badly scraped, got a bad nose bleed, and needs new glasses lenses. Her writing hand was also scraped. I'm glad I kept her home. She didn't come out of her room until 10am.

This was a new experience for me as a mom as well. I was so worried about my girl I couldn't make dinner and miraculously, one of Chinese neighbors brought us dinner because she knew I had lived in Taiwan and liked authentic Chinese food. I was so drained I couldn't manage to do housework either so Dan stayed up late with me as usual to clean up. He's so kind and understanding.

This week, after living here for 7 months, I can say I am so glad we moved. Yes, I miss the neighbors and ward and home we left but now I can see there is no where else I would rather live. Feeling so grateful for such a great neighborhood and that my skateboarder will be all right.

Kaelah wore her neon pink rainbow scarf every day the next week to cover up the wounds on her face.  K wore this any time someone outside our family might see her:  to school, outdoors.  She even skipped a birthday party a couple days afterward.  She literally watched the party from our windows and I snuck her a cupcake.  (We let her stay home from church on Sunday.)  She was so scared of being made fun of.  Looks are so important to her. On the bright side, she loved the new frames I picked out for her at Target.  Turns out they are cheaper AND cuter at Target (vs. the optometrist).  Who knew? D and M were real troopers while I dealt with all the replacement stuff.  Turns out our vision insurance that we pay $7/month for saved us a whopping $15.  Between that fact and it doesn't cover the optometrists K & I go to, we won't be signing up for that again.  Live and learn.

She felt healed up enough to show her face just in time for Easter.  (Easter will be my next post.)  K told me she just ripped the last one of on Saturday so she could go outside and play.  Whew.  If you look closely, you can still see where she was injured, but she has already gotten back on the skateboard.  K truly is talented at anything she tries.  That reminds me, she is doing awesome with her piano lessons.  My mom helps her practice and thinks she can memorize the songs simply by listening to them.  Although we want her to learn how to read music as well, we think that's a pretty neat trick too.  She has also mastered the pogo stick.  I don't know a whole lot of people who can do that!  (I tried to post a video of it, but it won't process correctly here on Blogger.  Ug.)

There was a whole lot of soccer playing in the last 5 weeks.  Today was the last game for both D & M and I am grateful.  D does an fantastic job, but I can't help but get all stressed out when he gets frustrated and jabs one of his opponents in the stomach or gets so excited he tackles one of his favorite teammates to the ground.  I asked him if he had anything to say about playing this spring and today being the last day and he responded, "My favorite sport is soccer "  M is still pretty timid.  She likes to have mom or dad hold her hand while she is on the field and likes to snuggle with us when off the field.  Usually she doesn't even want to be there until the half time snack.  lol.  Here is their team photos and K's class photo.  (I can't believe how much I spend on professional group photos with these 3!)  We received the official letter in the mail saying that D would have the same teacher as K when he begins school this fall and we couldn't be happier.

Our major project of the moment is the garden.  Starting from scratch is an adventure!  At least this time we had bare dirt to work with instead of getting rid of gigantic weeds and removing rock.  Still, kudos to Dan for building wonderful boxes.  We had dirt delivered on what happened to be a very windy day.  Check out K's hair in the picture of her shoveling dirt into the wheelbarrow.  We ended up putting cotton balls in our ears (great idea, Blanche!) and wet down the soil regularly with a hose to keep it from blowing away.  Feels like Kansas to me!

Another, less windy day, we began planting.  I thought Meigo had a great spot to supervise from the breeze path.  She looked so regal to me.  I got a kick out of N diving right into all this as a 12-month-old.  Good thing we own washing machines and bathtubs and soap! The first week of May always means both my parents have their birthdays.  This year we had them over for dinner and ate fancy Costco cupcakes (that are huuuuge) and sat on the front port watching the children play while we talked.  I am so grateful for them.  Here's to wishing them a wonderful year because they are wonderful, generous, Christ-like people.  Love you both!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
