for the health of it

Dentists, pediatricians, and optometrists are checking up on our children this summer.  I switched dentists when we switched insurance and these three did wonderfully, even in a new place with new people.  I sure was one proud momma that morning!

Danny & Natalie had their check-ups together.  Danny is growing nicely & we have zero concerns.  Natalie seems to be taking more after Kaelah:  92nd percentile for height & 44th for weight.  She is still on her Zantac, but only once a day now.  A big help was cutting all soy and beans in general out of my diet. My
food sensitivity specialist also recommend limiting grains, but I
haven't been able to do that very well. Between this and going off of
dairy and wheat and corn and oranges last fall, by process of
elimination I'm now supposed to follow the Paleo diet -- which I
thought sounded insane the first time my friend Kate told me about it.
After 36 hours with no grains I was so hungry I was about to cry and
gave up. So now I only have grains 2 or 3x/day instead of 4 or 5x. Oh,
adventures in eating.  Her ability to notice and pay attention to things has greatly increased and she has become oh so verbal.  And don't interrupt or she'll get frustrated.  It is like she really is trying to tell us something specific and wants us to understand.  (I promise she does have more clothes than this outfit.  It's a lucky one that doesn't get puked on or blown out in much, so she has a lot of pictures taken in it.)

I had a feeling I should take Kaelah to the optometrist before she started kindergarten this fall.  I had no concerns, but she had refused to cooperate when the pediatrician tried to test her eyes last summer and thought making a special trip to a special place would help.  I took her to a pediatric optometrist who had come highly recommended from our friend, Valerie R.  As she was asked to say the letters of things, she shook her head so
they tested her with shapes instead. I knew something was wrong because of all the ones she was missing, but I had no idea how bad it really was. After dialating her eyes the optometrist used a nifty tool I had never seen before while Kaelah got to watch Finding Nemo. Turns out she has a lazy eye and is super farsighted. Her prescription is stronger than mine. That's saying a lot.
As Dr. G explained the situation and treatment I literally became nauseous. I was upset we hadn't caught this sooner, upset we don't have vision insurance, upset that this child has the WORST luck. The Dr. paused to get me water and then explained things to K.

Kaelah picked out some really cute glasses and I think she looks great in them.  I didn't care about money in hopes if making this transition as easy as possible for her. It took me an entire week to wrap my head around it.

I was so mortified by the experience I made appointments for D and M. Michelle was so jealous K got to have glasses she threw the biggest temper tantrum of her life. Meanwhile, Kaelah was crying because she had to have them. And Natalie was crying b/c she had been napping for the babysitter, T, the whole time I was gone and needed fed.  Poor Danny!  He just kept asking for more info, like why his big sister's eyes didn't work.

K is doing a great job wearing them and taking care of them and even cleans them herself.  She likes it when people react with the words pretty or beautiful.  She's not as fond of the words smart, mature or older.  So the next time you see her, remember it is more important to look good than to be intelligent.  lol.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
