Education is a tough topic for me. I can talk about it for hours on end... if I had the time. In a nut shell, I graduated with a degree in education, had to wait for my local license, so took a job at a preschool. It was soooo not what they had taught me about in college. But Waldorf Education, for early childhood and the lower grades at least, is what I feel education should be. I worked at a Waldorf school as a summer camp and substitute teacher since I didn't have the official training before Kaelah was born. So, when one of my former co-workers began a Waldorf inspired preschool in her home, it was a no brainer to send Kaelah there. I can't believe her time there is over!
At Kaelah's birthday celebration (above) and the last day of school (below).
Stacey said she certainly visualizes us coming back to Waldorf, but as for now, Dan & I have decided (it was a long and painful process) to send our children to public school. Gasp! The opportunity cost of the money that would be spent on tuition for 3 children was just too high. In order to help Kaelah adjust to an entirely different way of teaching, we have (after a not-as-long process) to send her and Danny to another friend, another Stacie, and her at-home preschool. Kaelah & Danny each go a different morning at week (only 1 for the summer) to maximize time away from each other and they love it. Kaelah catches on to concepts super quick and loves having her friend Lizzie there. I'm telling you, Kaelah is smart! Example: subtraction. Yeah, filled out the worksheet on her own the very first time. Amazing. Danny is just super excited to be old enough to begin preschool (he turned 3 the day after his first day) and to be around BOYS. He wants a big brother so badly! Sorry, hon, you've got a big sister.
My barely 3-year-old is in love with the Avengers. He has the shoes, he has the book, he was given an Iron Man action figure. He's only watched a couple cartoon episodes, but he is a big fan. He also, for reasons unknown to me, loves Star Wars! Now I love the original trilogy, especially Return of the Jedi, but I'm thinking he's way too young to start watching that. He even bought a light saber with the money Dan's parents sent for his birthday. Thank goodness he still likes Cars & Toy Story or I would have to cry.
Could a boy be any happier for his very first day of school?!?
Kaelah was so proud of him too. If I was the crying type, I'd bawl every Wednesday morning when he leaves. Except for those days when the fighting with big sister begins before 8am. Then I'm totally willing to let anyone go hang out somewhere else for a couple hours.
