Cupid’s Influence + President’s Day

The weekend before Valentine’s Day found not one but three boys buzzing their heads and my house with two boys dying their hair bright pink!  The trend at the middle school recently is for boys to have longer, shaggy hair but Danny’s hair was driving him crazy. When he realized it was interfering with his ability to see while playing basketball he decided to go drastic and get a buzz… and then bleach it, and then dye bright pink hearts on it for Valentine’s Day. After school on Friday I took him and his new crush plus another friend to Sally’s Beauty Supply. Although they had consulted with the art teacher first it was pretty obvious none of us knew what we were doing and had to ask for help. Soon this is what my bathroom looked like:

It was quite the adventure with lots of being nervous combined with plenty of laughter. The bleach job turned out orangish so Danny decided to dye all his hair pink. Then Z decided to dye his recently buzzed hair pink as well. Then two of Natalie’s friends got permission to put pink strips in their hair. But it wasn’t over. The next day two more of Danny’s friends buzzed their heads with 4 of their female peers watching.

On Valentine's Day I had the day off and loved volunteering at Natalie's class party.  Can't believe she only has one of these February parties left before middle school!  It was a joy to be in her classroom and seeing her with friends she has known since she was preschooler or before.  Hubby brought me flowers and chocolate but we got to celebrate on my next day off since his Tuesday had been filled with vital meetings.  We tried out the new Hawaiian BBQ place in town and I know I'm definitely going back.  It was so nice for just the two of us to be together for a little while in the midst of all the going to and fro to kids activities has been.  It's great to see them doing things and I truly enjoy it but far too often it means my other half and I have to divide and conquer.  Even our romantic day got shortened by my coworker getting a migraine and stuff happening at Hubby's work he needed to attend to as well.  Time to plan a trip out of town so that our jobs can't call us in on days we wanted off!  And yes, we could have said no, but we decided together to go ahead and help the places we love out.

The first day of school’s mini break found me waking up to a 4:30am alarm in order to ensure Danny was ready for his ride to the airport at 5:00.  No need to worry, that boy was so excited for his first out of state trip all by himself that he was instantly out of bed and downstairs in about 5 minutes. Boy am I glad that Parker’s mom was going with them not only to help me feel better about sending Danny off but also because she drove while I tried to go back to sleep. Danny told me he was going to have a great time with his team and asked me not to worry about him. He knows me so well.  Can’t help it feel lucky to have him in our family. Jamie also sent us text updates and even a video of Danny making a sweet basket after missing a free throw.

Friday also meant Hubby and Natalie got to go skiing together!  They didn’t go last year so they told me she had to relearn a little in the morning but was doing great by the end of their day. I love the photo Hubby texted me. Natalie had been begging to go skiing again and I am glad Hubby was willing and able to fulfill that wish for her.  I love them both so much.

Don’t worry, everyone got to do something special over President’s Day weekend. Saturday found Michelle finally getting to experience goat yoga… which also meant Natalie and I got to as well. I’m so glad Michelle had the idea to go because talk about smiles and laughter!  I don’t think you’ve experienced yoga fully unless you’ve had a goat on your back. Lol. We would definitely be willing to do that again and/or recommend to others.  Natalie did decline the goat yoga birthday party idea though. Ha!  It was so fun to find Michelle a new outfit at Tilly’s and let the girls pick out new shower gel for their bathroom too.

Hubby spent part of Saturday (longer than he was hoping) replacing the fabric screen in the basement.  Unnamed but suspected teenagers had spilled soda on the white fabric that didn't wash well and Hubby had hear this material was not only better for dark scenes in movies and would be easy to spot clean. My favorite movie to test things out is still Tron Legacy and that Lightcycle scene was looking mighty fine if I do say so myself.  I don't know what I would do without this guy.  The next day he also helped Michelle redo the bench/desk chair in her room.  It looks so much better with the theming she has had for a couple years and doesn't look the way it did when it was a hand me down from her big sister -- the wood was pink and the top had a multicolored floral that was mostly pink and chocolate brown.  Now it is truly Michelle's.

When my coworkers talked about that places they would visit over the 4 day weekend I announced we were going to Greeley for volleyball and I think they felt sorry for me. Greeley is famous for not smelling good but it was beautiful!  Hubby had actually taken Kate for day one of the tournament due to me taking Michelle and Natalie to the before mentioned goat yoga. Day 2 it was my turn to wake up early (at 5:30am).  Luckily it wasn’t too hard since Hubby enabled me to go to bed early by taking care of the girls.  The first set was really close with Hana winning it with an ace. The second set started out well but lost. The third set was close and our girls probably could have won but it just wasn’t in the cards. Luckily game 2 was pretty much the opposite. Started out really rocky but pulled off a win. Lost a super close second set and there was much rejoicing when they won 15-13 in the 3rd set. They just seemed to be playing so much better that second game. It was really fun to watch!  The third game of the day we could rest easy a bit on the bleachers with our favorite girls maintaining a decent lead during both sets.  They made sure to give us a heart attack by getting clear to 24 points and then letting the other team have a little run before they officially won.  I took a ton of photos but I'll just add a couple here.  (I want to make a video of Kate's serves because she was doing so well I just started taking video instead of photos when it was her turn.). I really like the one I caught of her smiling after they won the last game of the day.  Winning really is more fun and I am so proud of all the hard work I saw out on the court.  I can't think of a better way to spend a morning than watching your teenager do something they are passionate about.  You are amazing, Kate!

Day 3 of the tournament was going to be my turn to go again while Hubby took Michelle to an appointment but when H's family offered to bring her over that night to recover in their hot tub... and drive her up to the last day of the tournament after spending the night... Kate couldn't refuse and I didn't blame her one bit.  I suddenly had an entire morning free up.  Before Natalie would have gone to the tournament with me but now she had Mom all to herself.  What did we do?

Natalie said the number one thing she wanted to do with just the two of us at home was work on puzzle.  We finished a puppy one we were almost done with already & started and finished a whole other one.  Then we made brownies and cleaned up Kate's room and did some housework so that Natalie could earn some money.  It was a lovely morning and in the afternoon we worked on Natalie's scrapbook for a good long time together before test driving a couple Expeditions with Hubby.  There were lots of fancy features on those new Expeditions and one is what we ended up calling death buttons.  As Natalie figured them out she accidentally trapped herself in the far back and then folded the chair down while I was sitting on it.  I haven't laughed that hard for a very long time.  P.S.  After Michelle's appointment they went to have brunch.  I'm so grateful for those two humans!

As for Kate, I got one text: "Lost our game 25:23,23:25, 10:15 can u pick me up from Hana’s at 1" and one photo posted by a parent of her head coach wearing a blue wig.

As for Danny, they won their last game of the tournament and made it home from Oregon safely and on time.  It was so great to see him walk in through our front door and tell us about his trip.  He had a great time and I'm glad he got to go!  But life seems more complete when we are all under the same roof.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
