MLK Weekend

Kate and Hubby got to go to the first out of state volleyball tournament of the year, this time to Kansas City.  Their head coach said he was very proud of them all for never giving up while playing on a brand new team in their first tourney of the season.  It sounds like these girls played against some very talented teams but had a great time.  Kate came home exhausted but happy and I think they are looking forward to the first local tournament next weekend.

Meanwhile at home the four of us journeyed to Sheel's & Michelle's favorite restaurant.  Turns out me putting away the Christmas decorations saved us almost $700!  We had purchased me a really nice coat for Christmas but it turned out the zipper didn't work right.  I figured I would just deal with it since I didn't know where the receipt was and was so happy when I found it while spending hours putting away the Christmas decorations.  Imagine my surprise when I carefully looked at that piece of paper and realized they had charged us for two coats!  I had no idea if they would believe me but I knew I could at least return the $330 coat and that would be worth the trip.  Beside, Natalie had outgrown her softball bat and Sheel's is the most fun place to try out different ones before you make your purchase.  So after Michelle and I attended our ward young women's annual training (the leaders did such a good job!) while Danny babysat in the morning we headed up to Sheel's in the afternoon.  Of course it was obvious the coat I brought was defective and they gave me that money back right away.  The wonderful employee then explained a member of the loss prevention team would need to take a look at the video to make sure we only left with one coat before they could refund me for the mistake of scanning twice.  Before we had even finished picking out a new softball bat she called me and let me know the video showed we only left with one of those coats and they gave us the money back.  With the taxes we saved more than $660 because I decided not to buy a new jacket even though there were some ones I was considering while we were there.  From then on the day felt like it was already paid for.  Natalie really liked an expensive bat but we were able to get last year's model for cheaper than the bat she liked second most.  We ate at Cafe Athens and even got a huge combo platter appetizer so that we could try lots of Greek food.  Danny and Natalie had never been there before and absolutely loved it.  Turns out Natalie loves pita bread!

After dinner we decided to head back to closer to where we lived since Danny had friends coming over but we had time to get one of each weekly specialty cookie at Crumbl & fill up the gas tank with plenty of time to spare.  And we spent no where near what we saved by going up there.  That night Danny had a few friends over with C spending the night so I'm thinking only Michelle slept well Saturday.  Poor Natalie woke up vomiting and it may have ruined pita bread for her.  The dog thought that since it was already a terrible night she may as well have me let her out at 3:30am, which is when I realized Danny & C were still awake playing video games in the basement.  Since they had two basketball games scheduled for the evening I turned off the projector, told them to go to sleep, and took the remote with me.  What a party pooper but I was not in the mood after dealing with vomit.  The next day Natalie was still sick so I got Michelle a ride to Church and Natalie did feel up to playing Quirkle.  We decided that with only two players you should get double the tiles to move things along and one time that meant I got to make a Quirkle out of only one existing tile.  Kind of fun but I am sure not bother in law approved.  lol.

Since Natalie wasn't feeling well I offered to find Danny a ride to basketball but the girls assured me they would be fine having me take Danny to his two games so that I could watch.  At one point our basement camera sent me an alert so I looked at the live feed.  It was Michelle and Natalie cleaning up after themselves when they were done watching The Bureau of Magical Things for the night.  I was so grateful for them and it looked like they were all smiles.

Danny's team had to work hard for every single point their first game against boys that did not seem to miss a 3 pointer or free throw.  The second game was less of a loss and in the 4th quarter most of the time there were only a couple baskets our team needed to make to tie the game.  With only a 2 point spread and a few seconds left in the game there was a foul and the other team's player made both of his free throws, pretty much ending the game.  But at least they felt a little more capable after playing their 2nd game.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day we enjoyed a day off school and work by sleeping in, Danny and I going to Target while Michelle babysat (she made bank this weekend), Natalie feeling better and playing with friends and Danny and his friends making MLK a birthday cake.  While Natalie was at S's house Michelle and I made a quick trip to the bookstore on Main Street to purchase the next book she wanted to read, got insurance covered at home Covid test kits for the next time someone didn't feel good, & got a few things at the Dollar Tree.  Before we knew it we were at home eating dinner and getting updates on when Hubby and Kate would arrive back at the house.  And just like that our 3 day weekend came to a close.  Funny thing is we all went back to work and school on Tuesday but it was a snow day on Wednesday!  (Before we talk about the snow day, Tuesday night I couldn’t stop smiling as I watched some of our SSN students perform in a drumming concert.  They used 5 gallon buckets as their drums and seats and it was incredible to see their mixtures of happiness, nervousness, and pride. I was thrilled Hubby and Michelle came to and could see a little bit of the wonderful personalities I get to work with at the school. Ok. Back to snow.)
After the necessary online stuff they have to do now on snow days the kids got to do things like video games, hanging out with friends, reading and watching a movie with their day away from school. I do miss the old fashioned school days, though. It’s easy for elementary school but harder with middle and high school having several sets of instructions from different teachers. Oh, well. I have really enjoyed all of the beautiful snow that has stayed around.  For some reason seeing snow on the ground makes the cold so much more enjoyable for me.  For instance, I pulled all the blinds up so I can see the sparkly white as I’m going about my business at home. I am not minding the weather this January!  I read that we are almost 8" above our average snowfall for the season already!

It was interesting to see what got canceled and what didn’t. Honors Orchestra, volleyball practice & basketball were a no go but Natalie’s dentist appointment and YM/YW went ahead as usual.  Kate spent time with P, Danny went to the rec center with J, Michelle got lots of reading in and she & K’s car named “Scripture Power” took 5th place at the YM/YW potato derby, and Natalie got to play with the neighborhood girls per usual.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
