2020: A Year Full of Surprises

First, here is some fun before we had a big surprise handed us this year.  Off roading on our way to visiting Rocky Mountain National Park.  We had waited weeks for our reservation day to arrive!

Yummy treats Danny made after learning how in virtual FCS class. Electives are the best.

Taking our last chance to get a reservation at our favorite outdoor pool meant only the elementary schoolers could go on a Friday while Grandma stayed with the middle schoolers to finish their full school day.  I really wish they would take it a little easier on my middle school kids during this pandemic but it is what it is.

At 106,000 miles, our 2011 Toyota Sienna kicked the bucket.  It began acting up as I was driving due to safety features helping with the steering by using the breaks.  A warning came on to check the VSC System at the dealership.  I felt like I shouldn't drive it anymore and my mother was generous enough to bring me her car when we needed to take the children to their extracurricular activities.  Our service appointment at the dealer confirmed what I was afraid was true but really didn't want to be.  It would cost an estimated $7,200 to fix the mini van I had been driving around for the last 10 years.  We were so disappointed it only made it 106k miles but grateful for the memories and the safety of our precious children all those years. Hubby and I decided that we should buy a car that our oldest could drive in three years but that I would be willing to drive around unit she turned 16.  Have you ever gone shopping to pick out a vehicle and tried to make six people happy at once?  Well, turns out sometimes you find something that wasn't really on your radar and don't even bother test driving ones that were on the list of things you're interested in.  Our 3rd dealership and winner of the day was VW when we decided to try to find an SE r-line Tiguan black edition with the available third row.  Since we were looking on a Saturday, we needed to wait until Monday to hear back from the sales rep.  I had a feeling there was no way they could find what we wanted and not have to wait a long time to bring it home. (Both VW factories in the States had closed down due to the pandemic so these Tiguans were flying off the lot.) On Labor Day we got the news a delivery truck from Texas had arrived and what we wanted was at another dealership ours could trade with.  Pretty exciting!  On Wednesday we had our new car and just in time to take Michelle to acting class and Natalie to the dentist.  Later that evening we also got to put all 7 seatbelts to use car pooling to YM/YW at the church building.  It still feels surreal to have a new vehicle when we weren’t planning on it.  The people we worked with at the dealership were great and we are certainly enjoying getting to know our new car!

P.S. When we picked out this car on Saturday the high was reported at 100° and when the car was delivered a few days later there was snow on the ground! Oh, 2020, you are full of surprises!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
