Memorial Day and Beyond

I don’t usually have my entire family sit down to watch a war film but this Memorial Day it was very important to me that they know this isn’t just a day off work to bbq with friends anyway.  I loved this movie!  I liked this quote from USA Today because my parents had showed me the old movie mentioned here: “Retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Samuel J. Cox, director of the Naval History and Heritage Command and the Navy's liaison for the film, says the movie is more accurate than 1976's "Midway" starring Charlton Heston and Henry Fonda. Cox ultimately gave the current telling a strong thumbs up.”  Making history come alive is one of my favorite things!
To make Memorial Day a little more special Michelle and I made (and Hubby pulled out of the oven for us) a giant cookie/cake to later place vanilla ice cream, Hershey’s syrup and red white and blue M&Ms on top. Delicious!  Next time we are going to half the mini M&Ms inside but we liked the recipe idea from our Six Sisters cookbook for sure.
As everyone gets used to more opening up, we had our first play date in months outdoors and with masks on. The girls had a wonderful time and we definitely want to have more time to play in the cottonwoods at the Waldorf school. I have to add it was way more fun than all the appointments we found ourselves having that week. Natalie went to the optometrist and is getting new glasses, Hubby went in for a check up, Danny and Natalie had cavities fixed, Kate and Michelle got their hair cut, and I had a follow up doctor appointment online.  (I get to go to physical therapy.). It still is strange to have places to be at a certain time.  Danny also got to have an outdoor play date with R & G & C at the nicest bike park around.  I love it when he can be outdoors having a good time with wonderful neighbors.
This is what Piper looks like when I’ve been weeding for hours. ❤️

While we watched the Space X NASA launch Natalie got into her old astronaut costume. After we finished eating lunch we continued to watch downstairs as we reorganized the basement and put together the elliptical machine that is Hubby’s early Father’s Day present.  We are saying good-bye to our hand me down air hockey table that doesn’t work anymore and saying hello to an easier and more enjoyable way to get our exercise in.  (The puppies keep me company.)
Hiked Sugarloaf for the first time, drove Hubby’s truck along Switzerland Trail, and make a quick stop at Gold Hill to look at the outside of old buildings for a little local history.  So grateful to the nice woman who convinced us to let her take our picture. This pandemic has literally made me scared of strangers (really their germs) and I don’t like that feeling.  I want to go back to loving people but I’m really out of the habit!
Speaking of loving others, I am so grateful for books that have helped teach me to see things from another person's point of view.  I was taught to be color blind growing up, just as my parents were before me.  Only recently did I learn, through the help of friends and books, just how prejudice our country really is.  I highly recommend Homegoing, The Hate U Give and Just Mercy as three books that really opened my eyes.  Of course, I am missing my book club fans that I got to talk to about Homegoing and here of their personal experiences as well.  The other day I taught my son about white privilege in the context of him beginning middle school this fall.  Danny said he would stand up for anyone being picked on at his new school.  I hope he remembers that promise when the time comes.  I love him so much and he is such a terrific kid.  I hope he loves middle school -- I did!

I had to put in a little bit of what Kate and Michelle have been doing lately.  Kate made macarons for the first time and she did a magnificent job.  Michelle has enjoyed making sure her creations get eaten.  These two have also tried face masks but I bet you can tell who hates summer workbook the most!  lol.  My mom was laughing so hard when she saw that I just had to share.

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
