When the end to summer break is in sight

The countdown to school begins for us when the calendar says August.  One of the things we decided to get done before 5th grade began was getting K into a different orthodontist.  This led to K having two baby teeth pulled by our wonderful friend Dr. T. and getting braces on the next week.  K was a trooper!  She had asked M lots of questions about getting teeth pulled and felt confident she knew what she was getting into.  Dr. T did a great job explaining things and keeping the atmosphere a calm one.  I was impressed with both his professionalism and K's bravery.  5 stars all around!

In between getting teeth pulled and braces we hosted Activity Days Day Camp at our house from 9am-3pm one day and took the girls to Sister W's lake the next day.  The weather didn't cooperate -- gave us heat when we were cooking over a fire and cold when swimming -- but I think the girls had a great time.  They are such a wonderful group of girls.  Sister E was sure to make me sit down lots to ice my foot and the girls were more than will to help fetch items for me.  My children later said they wished Sister E would come over every day!  (They especially enjoyed it when she babysat them while I went to the dentist!)  Thank you, Sister E!  You are an angel!
  We practiced first aid, played field games in the pocket park, cooked hot dogs and had s'mores, and made a movie using the Clips app.  The movie took so long we had to leave the next couple of activities for the 1st meeting we have after school starts.  Planning ahead -- I like it!

My mom helped with the Activity Days Day Camp not only by preparing everything for and teaching the first aid section but also by taking care of N and D for me.  D attended two afternoons of Star Wars themed camp at the local gym and N got some much wanted one on one time (something I can tell she has missed over the summer).  Thank you, Mom!
I had been looking forward to paddle boarding and kayaking with my Girl Scout troop for months but alas, my foot said no way.  Lucky for me, though, the woman running the event had a left boot for me to borrow and had her husband bring it to M. lake for me.  Later when I finally went to the orthopedic to make sure it wasn't broken (since it was still swollen a week later) he just told me to keep icing and wearing the boot and taking Advil like I had been.

While M and I were at the lake D got to go to one of his favorite places for a neighbor's birthday party and K was at an all day long (8:30am-3:30pm) babysitter's training and Hubby and N went to free day at the dump and had adventures in trying to donate items to thrift stores using his pick up truck and lots of muscles.  Both those things got to be used again when I found the loft bed K wanted used on Craigslist.  Three cheers for Hubby and my dad setting it all up for her!  After seeing how much D and M loved their rooms after having to clean them out, we wanted K to have the same chance.  I guess this was her birthday present even if it wasn't on time!  She loves her new mattress too.  Wondering what I'm going to do with that queen bed that used to be in her room (since the times that room was a guest bedroom)?  Well, I'm thinking of turning our art room in the basement into a guest bedroom but not right now!

All this organizing has made me think that if we ever do move again it will be the death of me.  Yet I keep threatening to move to Florida for the winter but Hubby is rooting for New Zealand.  I said he had to take me on a trip there first.  (;
It is just so fun to see these future kindergarteners playing at the park together!

It's also pretty neat to get a date with my favorite boy.

And super fun to celebrate K's birthday with her friends.  Such a nice group of girls came over to play, eat cake & watch Thor Ragnarok.  Happy birthday again, my favorite oldest child!  I am so proud of all you have accomplished and know 5th grade is going to be great, just like you!  I loved her 11 year interview:

M and D spent an afternoon on ropes in the trees.  My favorite part to watch was when they were almost done and the teachers swung M and D at each other on the ropes.

K decided to get a short hair cut and all 3 girls opted to buy cute things at Game Stop with their own money.  Here's to the last little bit of summer for K & N!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
