N is an entire handful now

My youngest child isn't so little anymore.  5 years old seems like a big birthday to me.  I am so proud of how kind and confident she is becoming.  Her smile is one of the best sights in the world and the #1 thing she wanted to smile about for her birthday was a party with her friends.  Trust me.  I offered to take her to Disney World for her birthday and she opted for a party at our house instead!

Much to the surprise of those who know her, my mother convinced her to have a princess party and since 1/3 of her friends were going to be boys we made it a princess & pirate party.  We had lunch (Annie's mac & cheese and Pirate's Booty of course) and helped the children make treasure maps, princess crowns, play pin the princess/pirate in the castle, had them walk the plank in the basement (which was a bigger hit than I expected), play parachute type ocean games, go on a treasure hunt (K.W. did an awesome job running that part since my voice wasn't working), have cake and open presents.  I think my favorite moment was seeing all 12 preschoolers come running down the stairs during the treasure hunt.  They are such a great group of children and moms and I was so grateful for their friendship and help.

On N's actual birthday my parents helped us celebrate by eating with us and giving her Minnie Mouse themed presents.  N absolutely loves the Minnie Mouse dress and hooded towel my mom picked out.  As soon as they are out of the wash she is using them again.  D, M and I had picked out some other presents like Star Wars Legos (the set that has the Porg), a necklace with the #5 on it, and a toy car mat.  I ordered it off Etsy and it is magnificent.  It won't smear like the old ones because it is fabric and the best part is we got to personalize it to say things like K's pizza, D's movies, M's flowers, and N's ice cream shop.  It has been played with pretty much every day since and I highly recommend it!

Soon after N's birthday, we got to drive Hubby's new truck for a day while the mini van was in the shop.  (Our mini van really didn't like going on a big road trip.)  Some of her preschool friends played with it in the school parking lot before we left and then her friend M helped us take it through the car wash -- twice.  Turns out the basic wash doesn't do it for a truck so we upgraded the monthly membership I had just purchased for Hubby and went through again.  Preschoolers think that sort of thing is pretty cool.

My super duper helper as we begin working on the garden (above) and on our way to M's baptism in Hubby's truck, below.

Somehow I didn't get a picture, but below you will see N laughing as we ate out for breakfast one morning.  The mini van was a complete disaster after going to AZ so we had it in for the mega clean and she and I walked over to a restaurant.  We were wearing our matching shirts and got so many complements on them.  I savor having a daughter young enough to still want to be just like mommy.  I know it will end all too soon.  5 has been a magical age so far and I can't wait for the rest of it.  This year is going to be a great one for you, Miss N.  I love you more than words can say!  Happy 5th Birthday, my beloved youngest child!
BIRTHDAY OPINIONS:  Yellow is the best color and mac & cheese is the best food.  Mickey Mouse tv shows and Descendants 2 are the best things to watch.  We should visit cousins more often and play with stuffies and Barbies every day. The best pet would be a real live panda bear and when you grow up you should be a missionary, an astronaut or a farmer with M.  BIRTHDAY CHECK UP: N weighed 37 pounds, putting her in the 30th percentile (yay!) and was 3'7.5" tall, putting her in the 70th percentile.  It was also a good thing we had her well check when we did because she had croup and that one steroid pill really helped!  We'll go back later for kindergarten vaccines and made her an optometrist appointment.  I guess this means birthday fun is over!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
