Thanksgiving season 2017

"I hate lice!" became N's catch phrase this month.  Our school district no longer notifies parents when a student in your child's classroom has lice and there is definitely a lot of lice going around my kids' school right now!  1/3 of N's classmates have had it now and boy, are they a pain.  Days of doing laundry, creating mountains and my carpets have never been vacuumed this much before.  The first two lice treatments I gave this pretty patient preschooler didn't actually kill the lice so her best friend's mom brought us a different brand to try and it worked -- after 2 treatments.  N was even kind enough to snuggle me in the middle of the night so I Hubby could have the joy of combing eggs out of his wife.  Luckily that was caught early and only one treatment was necessary.  I am grateful N and I were the only ones that had to have it, but mad as heck that the school district changed their policy!

N was overjoyed to have Hubby not only fix the barely functioning door knob, but to put a handle on that she can even use with mittens on.  We had a big snow the first week of November but I only took videos, so this excitement over a door coming open will have to hold you over until the next big snow.

My Girl Scout troop decided to Take Action by using some of their cookie money to donate items to the Humane Society.  We had a blast taking them to PetSmart with a budget of $10/girl and then visiting the animals while dropping items off.The next week the weather was kind enough to let us earn our Outdoor Art badge!
D's den began working on the Marble Madness belt loop.  I liked helping my boy sew his own marble sack with his group of boys.
I think it's funny we name races at Thanksgiving time Turkey Trot.  Are we all pretending to escape the butcher so we don't end up as part of the annual feast?  (;  K, D and N all did a great job.  I let M be late to her school so that she could help her little sister run.  I know M was able to get her to go farther than she would have otherwise!  It was interesting to feel the difference between the two schools when I dropped M off.  The first was full of energy and excitement and the second was calm and content.  Both are great feelings, but M certainly likes the calm and a bit of excitement more than being pushed to do the next great thing.

In between going to the school to watch different children run laps to earn money for their school, my dad helped me recover from all the things that were not done while I was battling lice.  I love that he was as angry (or even more so) at the new policy and worked and worked when he wasn't watching his grandchildren run around.  We donated a lot more money this year because after seeing how much it takes to run M's school, it is obvious that if you want your children in a good school there has to be money.  Sad but true.  My favorite thing the PTO spends money on is extra para professionals but my children think the best part is they pay for all the field trips.

Hubby, D, M and I ran another, city, Turkey Trot on Saturday while my mom was kind enough to babysit the oldest and youngest children.  It was fun and a great reminder to buy a 2nd knee brace before D and I run a 5k later this month!

In between running M had her lantern walk to celebrate Martinmas.  The children made their own lanterns and learned special songs to sing.  N was invited to come along since this event is created for preschoolers through 2nd graders.  It was beautiful to go by candle light around the school grounds a bit while listening to children sing.  Then there was a beautiful, silent reenactment of the St. Martin story where a soldier sees a man cold and hungry, rips his cloak in 2 with his sword and shares it with the man and gives him of his food.  I'm glad I was able to be there with my two little girls.

In other news, one Saturday we tried to make grape jelly with the grapes from our vine using our Instant Pot.  Turns out grape syrup is delicious on pancakes!
K spent some of her hard earned money on a Hatchamal.  She was overjoyed to watch it peck its way out of the egg.  She decided not to save up for an iPod Touch anymore because my old iPhone miraculously began working again and she has been using that just the way she would an iPod.  She's happy as can be, cracked screen and all.  It's pretty fun to get a text message from your daughter when you are out running errands and your mom is babysitting.  One of the things K has done with her phone is watch YouTube videos on how to draw things like your favorite Descendants2 characters.  I'm so impressed at what she can do with those tutorials!

Over break my children got to cross things off their to do list, just like I did.  On Monday M went to horse camp (and the owner sent me this cute picture of her on a turkey saddle), D went to indoor soccer in the morning and finished his marbles Cubs belt loop with Grandpa in the afternoon, K went to a trampoline park with her best friend after doing homework with Grandma, and N got to help me get things done like go to the library.

Making GF/Dairy free pumpkin pie for mom!

On Tuesday D returned to soccer while Grandma took M to a Girl Scout event where she earned her World of Girls Journey.  In the afternoon Grandma stuck around to help K finish all her math homework while M went to play at her friend A.'s house.  She even was invited to stay for dinner!  On Wednesday M had an appointment at the orthodontist which went well and K had a check up that led to us switching medications.  That along with D going to soccer again chopped up our day quite nicely before the excitement of Thanksgiving.  (;

Our Thanksgiving meal meant my parents bringing over turkey and stuffing while Hubby made the best mashed potatoes in the world (so good K at them for breakfast afterwards), green beans, yams, rolls, and pie.I feel like we have a lot to be grateful for even if, in this picture, N is giving Hubby the stink eye for taking a picture BEFORE dishing out the dessert.  Last Friday my mom went back to the oral surgeon and found out she will not need to have another surgery or any more check ups.  Hooray! My parents have been such a huge help to us this week! All the children's teachers are happy with them and they are getting along well with their friends.  Hubby's work is work, but it could be worse.  Now that the lice fiasco is over (hopefully for good -- knock on wood) I think it will be much easier to take time to be grateful!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
