finishing off the basement

All the work we hired other people to do is finished!  The tile, carpet, and counter in the wet bar were the last projects to get done.  It was so hard to find people to do the work for us once spring was here so we didn't have it finished when we wanted to but hey, this is a want, not a need!  I also found it very interesting/infuriating the prices some people were willing to charge for the identical product.  For example, our backsplash tile in the wet bar would have cost us $32/sq. ft. if we had bought it from the place near hubby's work.  Luckily he thought to look online and it was $12/sq. ft. with free shipping.  Yes!  I couldn't find anything I liked at Home Depot or Lowe's as much as that one so I feel like he saved the day on that one.  He also received a huge compliment from the counter top guys for measuring so well.  The man had some fancy laser machine to help him and he said there were very few people who could measure like my husband did with just a measuring tape.  Reason #512 to marry an engineer?  lol.

The bathroom turned out great.  I scoured Pinterest for ideas and then found cheaper options to make it happen.  The framer had to build us a fake wall and raise the bathtub for us because the builders didn't install the rough in plumbing correctly and refused to fix it.  Since we had a structural floor this was the easiest and cheapest work around and it looks just fine!  I found a cheap mirror on clearance and spray painted it white and we grabbed this fun vanity on sale.  Everyone is surprised it cost so little with free delivery from Home Depot!

Originally we were going to put tile flooring near the wet bar and table area and linoleum in the art room, but this vinyl flooring that mimics wood flooring is just great!  I couldn't find any tile I wanted and hubby hated the idea of linoleum anyway, so when I realized what was on display at the flooring store was a cheaper option to tile, I went for it.  The carpet was already in stock and a great price -- much less than what a different store had tried to charge me.  The children helped me pick it out and they all love it.

They also love the screen their daddy made!  When people come over to see it I tell them it was my husband's baby.  I tell them about how he designed the built in shelving to hold all the electronics on the other side of the room after measuring all their dimensions, set up all the speakers, carefully built the wood frame, put up special foam, inserted a speaker into the dry wall, patiently painted thin layers of black paint on the speaker's screen to prevent a reflection, stapled the screen on, and painted the trim black.  He has put so much time and effort into our basement!

We've also had some unexpected surprises, especially when it comes to money.  For example, we had to spend about $1,00 on radon mitigation.  Yup, the EPA says your test results should come back at 4 or lower and ours came back at 14.  Lucky us.  Supposedly having a level of 10 or higher is as bad as smoking cigarettes.  Boy, I sure hope they are exaggerating and glad we could get it taken care of.

On the other hand, we didn't have to buy an air hockey table or a the white bookcase in the art room!  My friend T., who I've known for over five years from LLL, is moving to Virginia and downsizing in the process.  So she was more than happy to give me a white book case she was getting rid of.  And score of scores, when our friends the Jones family moved they gave our friends the H. family their air hockey table.  Then when they heard the basement was almost done, they said the table was too big for their basement and wanted to get rid of it.  Our two husbands works so hard to get that huge thing up their stairs, onto their pick-up truck, and down our stairs and put back together while the wives chatted and watched over the children.  I actually had our kids asleep in bed before they were done.  Thank you, guys, just doesn't seem to be enough to say!  The next day I had every available boy in the neighborhood at our house and K and M had saucer round eyes watching them all in amazement.

So the basement is being used but still desperately needs decorated and organized before I will really feel comfortable telling people it's done.  It hasn't stopped us from hosting a game night, book club, and showing movies in it, though.  Those other things will come in time.  But for right now, my children are about to start back at school and that is pretty exciting and scary for all of us!
Putting together the new Ikea table for upstairs after moving the old table to the basement.
How the cheap Wal-Mart bar stools arrived.  Hubby reported that they came in a million pieces and it was even worse to put together than Ikea.  I think that's really saying something!
Before & After: board games and puzzles are now all in one place instead of in 3 different places.  Woo hoo!
The free air hockey table, complete with little boys.
And my free stationary bicycle my loving husband fixed up for me and bought a new seat and feet for.  Thanks, hon!

Update:  Last Saturday's project for me (on 8/22) was to organize, clean, and decorate the art room.  Ta da!  It's mostly M's art work because she was the one helping me.  Now I only have to attack the mechanical room storage and decorate the walls and then I will really call the basement finished!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
