I simply adore how birthdays are celebrated in Waldorf schools. I was so full of pure joy I could have cried. The children had all found something special in the yard to give to her like an acorn shell or a pretty leaf and our family was invited to join us in a candle lighting ceremony where we shared a short story from every year of M's life. D couldn't have been sweeter to his little sister, either. He was so proud to be there after being picked up from kindergarten.
Her birthday fell on a Friday this year so after being fed cake and ice cream and given a present at her dance class, Daddy took her out to eat at her favorite restaurant, Texas Roadhouse.
The next day was her Octonauts birthday party. If you had asked me a year ago about this tv show, I would have had no clue, but she loves it now! It's like the Wonder Pets meets Wild Kratts under the sea. That wall in the dinning room got painted blue just in time, don't you think?
One of the reasons why M chose an Ocotnauts theme over the Frozen theme she had been talking about was that she wanted to invite the little boys from her primary class this year and thought they would like Octonauts better. She is such a sweetheart!
The boys liked the Gup bean bag toss a ton! And I loved the cake my wonderful husband made. I came up the with idea and he executed precisely. Our children had so much fun helping paint the jellyfish and were so excited for her party I felt the need to remind them that it wasn't their birthday. But who wouldn't get excited about the prospect of games, cake, and a piñata?
The week after M's birthday we all went to watch K and D participate in a school choir concert for the first time. The kindergarteners were so cute with half of them not having a clue what they were supposed to do. Even though K the did not want to participate, her teacher said if she didn't do it this year she would keep not wanting to every year if we let her opt out. So, we simple said she and D were going to go and now she knows it isn't something to be afraid of anymore. I am very grateful for a kind and wise first grade teacher to help this girl really blossom and try new things this year.
In other news, turns out N is allergic to penicillin, just like my mom. K and M had been hit with strep throat, so when N came down with a fever I took her in too. Even though her test came back negative, the doctor put her on amoxycilicin since K's rapid strep test had come back negative as well. Back to the doctor we went after she woke up looking like this after one dose! So they put her on a different antibiotic and the rash went away... and then they called to say the other strep test came back negative as well and to discontinue the antibiotics. Oh my.
I am so glad this girl prayed for that girl. #sisters
Progress in the basement! We have been delighted with the work the plumber and framer have done. I was teasing we shouldn't actually finish the basement because we have been having so much fun down there. We did run into a HUGE mess when the dry wall crew didn't seal off the basement before working... we had a layer of dust all over the first floor of the house that I am willing to bet money led to most of us getting sick. Due to little things like that, Dan and I are convinced the general contractor who finished off our last basement didn't charge us enough money!
D earned his t-shirt through the 100 mile club at school. His goal was to run 25 miles this school year and he ended up running 29. I'm so proud of him for doing what he said he would do over the course of many months and not quitting just because he got his shirt. Way to go, son!
