party! party! (literally)

M decided to have her first ever birthday party with friends this year since her brother D had his first friend party when he turned 4 last summer.  Tinkerbell is a super fun theme to work with and she only had 4 people to invite:  every girl from her preschool (K & E.R.), every girl from her Sunbeams class (E.F.), and every girl neighbor that was 4 already (N).  lol.  Made things easy for me.  And D only got to be there because he promised to wear either his Peter Pan or his Jake and the Neverland Pirates costume.  He was Jake the entire 3 hours of the party & didn't complain a bit.  Bless his heart!  I happened to see an adult Wendy costume at a consignment sale and grabbed it and had our Natalie wear M's old Tinkerbell costume that is still way too big so we just threw it on top of her jammies.

My partner in planning crime was my dear mom and she was also the cake maker, as is tradition.  I scored exactly what M wanted at the See Spot at Target, which helped me fulfill a couple ideas from Pinterest.  We also used the Ikea artificial plants as centerpieces at the cake table by my mom adding butterflies, ect. to them using skewers.  Thanks for that idea too, Pinterest.  How did moms plan parties before the internet?
Lastly, we watched the Secret of the Wings on Netflix for the end of the party.  Look at how content these kiddos are!  No wonder so many children in the US watch too much tv.  It was a fun and relaxed party and I was so happy I could do something special for my wonderful Michelle.  I am so grateful for this sweet girl who has blessed my life so much more than I have blessed her.  When she goes off without me I feel like a chunk of my heart is walking away.  I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to be her mom and what a joyful experience that is.

Also, M had her check up with Dr. R.  As I suspected, she is taking after me:  she's in the 48th percentile for height & the 49th for weight.  I was right down the middle too.  The doctor asked how the terrible twos and threes went with her & I replied. Ummm... they were practically nonexistent.  Tonight at bedtime M mentioned that she is mean sometimes, but only a little bit.  It's so true.  Yes, she is human and gets upset just like the rest of us, but she is so good.  I have often said she would be one of those children any mother could raise.  I couldn't be more happy with this little girl who is growing up oh, so fast.

Now usually Meigo doesn't get a birthday party, especially since her birthday is only 2 days after Michelle's.  But this year marks a major milestone: our dog turned 10!  This is incredible to me to think Dan and I moved here 10 years ago and bought this tiny puppy to sink all of our spare time and money into.  The whining, the unknown food allergy, the training -- the housebreaking! and the house breaking (destruction).  I have often said I am not jealous of puppy owners.  This dog was more work than an of my human babies.  At least you can stick a diaper on them!  But now Meigo is practically perfect in every way.  We couldn't ask for a better family dog and she is absolutely terrific with children.  You should see all she puts up with from our little humans.  Happy 10th Birthday, Meigo!  Here's to many more.

P.S.  These photos are even more precious now.  A little over a week after they were taken, Meigo's lifelong friend, Aspen, passed away at age 14.  She was a terrific dog and she and her owner, Barb, were great helpers in the training of our canine.  It made us truly sad and grateful she could be at the party.  (Meigo is the last of our doggie friends now -- her other best friend, Shadow, passed away about 18 months ago.)  Love you, Meigo dog!

Homecoming 2025

The tail end of summer has been so much fun.  The weather has been fantastic and we've all had special occasions to look forward to.  First up, a family party for Natalie's softball team that included pizza, whiffle ball, and seeing the girls just have a good time together as a team. Here's my favorite photo from when Michelle helped her friend, A, celebrate her 16th birthday.  Although she has been friends with A & Z since her time at the Waldorf school, Michelle ended up hanging out with a lot of strangers and had a wonderful time.  I love seeing her branch out and make new connections while maintaining her core friend group. Homecoming week included a BBQ, Powder Puff game and drone show, parade past the middle school where I was volunteering at the Rattler Run, plus a very exciting football game that even Hubby attended by being one of the basketball parents to man the concession stand. Danny did a great job tossing candy instead of throwing it and the basket...

45

I feel spoiled. My parents and our whole family around a dinner table was perfection. Hubby provided roses & a grilled steak, roasted potatoes, and fresh salad dinner complete with chocolate cake (decorated by Michelle).  My mom and dad bought me sweet and thoughtful gifts (including a mug Natalie had painted when my mom took her to Crackpots this summer) and even stayed to watch K Pop Demon Hunters in the basement. We thought it would be hilarious to watch them watch something so different from their favorite shows. They did not disappoint. It was a joyful evening that made me feel much better about turning 45 than I felt earlier in the day.  Below you’ll find what I had written before we celebrated.  Photo credit goes to Kate! 10 Years Ago I filled out interview questions for my 35th birthday and 5 years ago I did the same, adding 5 more questions.  I really don't think I should add 5 more every year because this is probably already too much information for an...

Adventures Begin

Michelle had been saving her money for years. She didn’t know exactly what for, but it turns out she used that money to travel with a group from her high school to Asia!  When people asked me at the end of the school year what I was excited for this summer, the first thing I would think of is Michelle’s trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam!  We loved getting texts and photos almost everyday and were able to FaceTime her a couple times.  She had quite the range of experiences from museums and treasures such as Angkor War to cooking classes and time on the water to learning how to fold flowers for offerings at famous Buddhas, and even hanging out with rats that sniff out landmines to be properly disposed of.  We are absolutely thrilled for her! While Michelle was in Asia, Hubby and Kate worked and Kate hung out with friends doing things like paddle boarding (it is great to hear her work stories!), Natalie and I watched the Women’s College World Series when we weren’...
