At this time

This time of year always seems special. It's not just that spring is finally in full swing, even though that's wonderful indeed. Here's just a glimpse of some of the things I've been thinking about concerning this time of year:

10 years ago I was finishing my freshman year of college. I was so jealous that my guy friends were all filling out mission papers or getting their mission calls already.

9 years ago I was turning in my own papers & ah hum, meeting my future husband.

8 years ago I was on my mission in Taiwan. It certainly was the right place for me to be.

7 years ago Dan proposed at the tennis courts we had played on when we first hung out.

6 years ago we moved to Colorado so Dan could begin is dream job. It's such a strange thought to me because the longest I've ever lived in the same town was in Iowa City for 6 years as well. I found myself mentally preparing to move & thought about what we should pack & what we should leave behind. Looks like we'll be here at least another year, though!

5 years ago my friends & I were saying good-bye to our amazing friend, Erin, as she died of cancer.

4 years ago I became completely disgusted with my first teaching job & found the Waldorf philosophy of education.

3 years ago we began e-mailing with Kaelah's birth mother. It took all the faith I had to turn down a full-time teaching job offer. I had to call the principal 3 times before I could say no.

2 years ago my biggest concern was that Kaelah wasn't crawling yet. The day I broke down & prayed about it she began to crawl.

1 year ago we were up on the adoption website, thinking our little boy would be born around Christmas. (The picture is from the trip my mother, Kaelah, & I took to VA last April.)

Now we're mini van shopping & going through almost 100 diapers, over 200 wipes, & doing over a dozen loads of laundry every week. Life is good.

Thanks for the great trip down memory lane! :) I think I'll be eternally jealous of those boys and you filling out mission papers and getting mission calls. I've made Arnold promise to take me on at least one mission and I keep asking if it will be 25 to try and make up for the mission I missed so I could meet him. Do you think it will work? :)

Congrats again on your cute new little one! I hope all is well!

How about some "I Spy"? In the background of your first picture (from freshman year) I spy Steve Minert and Chris Schmidt. I think I should do a post just like this one. It would be rather interesting.

Precious Pumpkin

Our Halloween pictures finally made it to the computer. I won't state the name, but let's just say we know a certain 15-month-old who likes to hide things, especially if they are small & silver like a memory card reader. (: Oh look, here she is now, dressed up as a pumpkin fairy! And check out the super neat pumpkin Danny carved. We actually had neighbors make the effort to come compliment him before trick-or-treating began! I have never experienced a Halloween where families hang out on the porch to hand out candy the entire night! I just can't get over how wonderful the weather has been this fall. Danny's 1st Year Video

Exactly one year ago today we got a call from our case worker. He told us there was a birth mother thinking of placing her son with us for adoption. Usually he didn't make such phone calls before an official decision was made, but he felt that this little boy was meant for us & we needed a little warning b/c the due date was June 12. Low & behold, 4 days later he called to say Dani had chosen us to be her baby's parents. 2 weeks later, we were bringing Danny home from the hospital. It is difficult to believe Danny's birthday is only 2.5 weeks away. When I look back I feel he & I were a little gipped with me getting pregnant so soon after he was born & becoming a big brother at only 9.5 months, but he is so healthy & happy. There is no way he could have been any better of a baby... I'm convinced he is the easiest/best little guy to have ever graced the planet. We are so blessed. He is truly a joy of a boy.

No check up, but doing great!

The pediatrician thought Kaelah was doing well enough to skip her 15-month check up... but I can't resist a formal update before she turns 16-months-old tomorrow. Of course I'll put this first on the list: Kaelah said her first Chinese word last week! Bi zi for nose -- which she heard for the first time in Hawaii. Looks like I'll have to pick out word #2 soon! Kaelah is selective about the music we listen to now. She'll either say, "no" or begin dancing. We're thrilled she will now fold her arms while we pray over the food & by her crib at night. Kaelah will also say "yummmm" while eating & will give high 5's and knuckles. I think you'll pick up most of the rest from the video. (:
