This is a picture of our happy Kaelah on February 13.
This is a picture of our sad Kaelah on February 14.On Sunday morning, about an hour before Church started, we were all downstairs when Kaelah went upstairs to get something. Meigo scratched on the sliding glass door to be let out in the backyard. Kaelah loves to let the dog in & out now-a-days, so I asked her if she wanted to let Meigo out or if I should do it. She replied that she wanted to, and began down the stairs. For some reason she tripped & fell... & kept falling. Dan & I both rushed to the stairs & he caught her before she reached the bottom, but it was too late. We sent Danny to the neighbor's & took Kaelah to the ER. After x-rays to prove it, we were told she broke her humerus directly above the elbow. Kaelah was a real trooper but ran out of patience when they put the splint on her. I kept having single tears drop out of each eye. After we got home Dan vomited all afternoon. What a Valentine's Day! Dan said it was the worst ever. I responded the worst ever would be one where I didn't have him.
The ER doctor said TV helps children with pain. I heard from a few different people that in small children sugar is a great pain killer. Kaelah has watched more movies & eaten more junk food in the past 2 weeks than she has in the entire rest of her life put together. I suddenly am a likable mother again, which I haven't really been since Daddy bought her a huge bag of M&Ms for her Christmas stocking.
We have since been to an orthopedic specialist twice & will go back again on Monday. Kaelah's bones seem to be just where they should be and luckily the splint that was put on at the ER is doing so well she hasn't had to get a cast on. Hopefully we'll see signs of healing on Monday and she'll only have to wear the splint a few more weeks. She really is doing great with it, considering. Understandably, she's more needy & edgy, but it's temporary and getting better every day. I feel so blessed that it looks like she will not need surgery!
Even though our poor girl had a broken arm, a few days later we still went to the BYU v. CSU game I had bought tickets to as Dan's Valentine's Day present. Kaelah was excited to have Shannon babysit & watch a movie with her. The game was great & we got to sit next to BYU fans, one of which was a woman entering the MTC in 2 weeks. She was so happy to hear I had served a mission too & had been to where she was going more than once (Virginia).Oh, and I wish we had a video of this: because Michelle is off to the left a bit, her bum was right where the basketball was on my jersey. It was great fun to watch the basketball move when she did! I got lots of smiles as I hiked my way up the stairs to our seats after half time too, regardless of who they were cheering for. I just adore attending CSU events, but I'm really glad BYU won too.
Last but not least, Danny hasn't gotten away from his share of pain. Last Saturday the 5 teeth he's been working so hard on finally cut through the gum. Yup, he's working on the top front 4 & one more on the bottom to go with the 2 teeth he already has there. You can see one of the top ones in his picture from when we turned him up-side-down to try to capture it. We've had to give him infant Tylenol every night for him to be able to sleep but we've still been able to get him to giggle once in a while. On Sunday I was sooooo very grateful Alli & her family had us over for dinner. It made my day. And it's nice to know we're not the only family that knows what it is like to rush to the ER or have a child cutting 5 teeth at once.We have a doctor's appointment for Danny at 4:15pm today. His fever has reached 102 & he is utterly miserable. Dan & I can't put him down without him crying. It reminds us of when Kaelah had RSV 2 years ago, but the fever is his ONLY symptom. So strange. Kaelah is at Grandma & Grandpa's house for the afternoon b/c I thought it would be much more fun for her there. She was very excited to have her car seat put in Grandpa's car. It's so wonderful to see her smile & laugh the way she did a couple weeks ago. And I'm so glad Michelle has decided not to be a premature baby amidst her siblings needing extra TLC!
